 Normandy 7

Anyone know anything about the Normandy 7, I bought it very used yesterday for $40. By very used, I just mean it looks like it hasn't been cleaned, but there are no leaks, and there are no cracks in the wood.

Depending on the condition, you got a great deal. Normandy clarinets are intermediate clarinets. I like them when they are set up right. The tone is usually really nice. Great clarinet for students.

Hello,

I have two Normandys (not the 7), and they work well for someone of my level.

I like them.

Thanks...I figured I got a great deal. I only offered 40 because that is all I really had. I wanted to buy a new clarinet, but couldn't come up with the 600+ for it. She was a really nice lady and she obviously was not worried about money, she said she is selling it because she doesn't play anymore, has strictly moved to the sax. I'm going to take it into the shop tomorrow and probably have them clean it and all.

Does anyone know the history behind the normandy 7? I have googled all 127 hits :), and I can't find anything.

Also, I was curious what size reed I should start with? 2.5? or 3? It came with a Yamaha Y-12 mouth piece.

Thanks

Don't know that mouthpiece.. but you might do fine with a 2.5 rico or a med soft La Voz to get started.

Thanks...so, I took it into the shop yesterday, and they told me that it was going $250 for an overhaul. Considering that I bought this for $40, should I do the overhaul or spend $150 more and buy a cheap used clarinet?

Hello,

I bought my second Normandy because I wanted to try overhauling an instrument myself. If you are used to working with your hands you may wish to try this.

If not, why not ask them how much simply repadding it will be so that it plays? I doubt that that will cost anywhere near $250. You can clean it up and then get them to repad it.

If the clarinet is basically shipshape, a good overhaul, for $250, is a fair deal. I'd go for it. You ought to have a very fine clarinet -- for $300 -- at the end of it.
