check the side trill keys and see if they are very close or touching at any point...I had that problem...very simple fix.

You say you think it comes from the lower joint, but do you have it all the time? Do you have it with notes that only use the left hand? Or is it only with some specific notes? If the former, then play with the upper joint only and see if it's there.

It always seems a little too obvious to mention, but does this happen with more than one reed? Does it happen with a reed one strength higher? I have from time to time heard a sound like the one you describe, caused by reeds that are too thin at the tip.

Locating gunk or mechanical problems is easier if you can zero in on when the rattle happens or when it's most pronounced. All over? Clarion register only? Chalumeau only? A specific range of notes? Does it ever stop? If you haven't yet found the cause, post more specifics.

I have sometimes noticed a "subtone" in my B5's and one time it was a loose screw on the upper post holding the long B/E lever. Another time it was a bell ring vibrating slightly. Hope this helps a little.
