 Could it be my reed?

I am am owner of a Vandoren 5rv profile 88 mpc, and i want to use Vandoren reeds with it, but when i try the v-12 reeds size 3.5 they are too hard, so i use my emery board to thin the tip, but after it is the right size my Middle B and C (all fingers down with register key) squeaks during the initial attack. I am pretty sure its the reed response. The best part is I had just gotten it back from the shop and I know the repair guys to play test the instrument.

Should I give up using v-12 3.5 and just try v-12 3?

It's possible that you are damaging the reed by thinning the reed tip.

Were the middle B and C squeaking before modifying the reed?

If the 3.5 is too hard, play with a 3. Messing with the tip (especially if that's all you mess with) will likely result in some weirdly proportioned reeds that I'd expect to get squeaks out of.

If you still get squeaks with the 3, have someone else play it with their mouthpiece. If THEY get squeaks, the clarinet is at fault.

I'd suggest getting the Ridenour ATG system for Reeds. It's really easy to use and you will get much more predictable results from it.

Sounds like it is the tip which you are thinning too much.

It will crack you up just how easy the ATG is to use and how well it works too. As it warms up with Spring here, you will find that your 3.5's play even harder than they did in the Winter.

I found the the Rue Lepic 56 (or whatever they are called!) reeds fit much better on my 5RV mouthpiece. I used a 3.5. If you have any of those handy you could try them instead of the V12.
