 The Klezmorim Forum...
Author: Nate Zeien
Date:   2000-10-31 20:29

Hello everyone. I'd just like to announce that I have opened up a forum for anyone interested in klezmer and jewish music. You can access this forum, "The Klezmorim Forum", at http://www.delphi.com/klezmer/start. Everyone is welcome to come and post. Although the main emphasis of the forum is klezmer music, any topic related to music will be allowed, even postings about trumpets... :-) You may need to become a member of delphi forums, but this is relatively fast and painless. I won't be as on top of things as Mark is, with his speedy replies and good management, but I'll try to do my best. Hope to see some visitors! -- Nate Zeien

Nate,
Delphi is impossible to access. We could go on discussing Klezmer right here, just as we discuss Mozart, Acker Bilk and all sorts of other clarinet-related topics. I can't quite see the point of a separate forum.

Is it just hard to get into, or is it literally impossible to access from your computer? We'll have to see if we can get it to work. Also, the whole point of a separate forum, is do discuss klezmer as a whole. Sure, there's nothing saying that we can't discuss it here, but there's more to klezmer than just clarinet. This is a excellent website for clarinetists, but what about klezmer musicians that play other instruments? It's sort of like an instrument repair forum. We discuss clarinet repair frequently, but for the most part it is limited to clarinet. People, including myself, have interests in repair of other woodwinds and brasswinds. Somehow, I just don't think talking about a klezmer accordian solo would fit too well here... -- Nate Zeien

Must admit my entire knowledge of Klezmer is based on that clarinet work in "Fiddler On The Roof." Liked it, wished I could play it. How about a little history, etc. of Klezmer.

Actually Bob, I have talked with Mark about putting a page or two of info and links about klezmer. Perhaps we can get something together within the next couple of months... Feel free to post any questions about klezmer you have. I'm still trying to stimulate some discussion... I'd answer your question right now, but I'm a little busy at the moment. It'll be evening before I get much time... -- Nate Zeien

Nate,
OK, I take your point. But I waited for more than five minutes for a connection with Delphi on a 56k modem. I doubt you will have many visitors if this is true for other users.

In case some of you are wondering why I didn't have nate start a new forum here on Sneezy:

I monitor the Sneezy BBoard on a more or less constant basis and keep it "on track". It takes a bit of time to read every message and do a quick "mental check" on whether I need to send a note to the author, edit the post, or possibly even more drastic action.

Nate asked me about putting the forum here, but Nate would have to act as lone moderator - I can't spread myself any thinner in checking more BBoards. Nate's a student and just wouldn't have enough time to really monitor, so ...

If a few of you got together and decided you'd like to be "co admins" of a klezmer discussion group it might be a doable thing. You know more or less the standards that are here on Sneezy (Off topic but related are generally OK for a while, no commercials but useful info from vendors is welcome, etc.) - if a few of you are willing to help Nate out - and can honestly say that you'll proactively monitor (not just say, but do) - then I'd be willing to set a new forum up & let it fly right here.

The band instrument repair forum run by NAPBIRT member Bob Baier is fairly easy for me to access. I don't know why it would take that long to access. I guess it depends on the time of day etc. I've never had to wait more than 30 sec or so, but that can seem like a long time when your just staring at a screen.

I tried it a couple of times yesterday and today, and connected very quickly. I have cable access.

Tied to the Forum page twice by clicking on the URL in Nate's original post. I use "Opera" as a browser and it took about 10-15 seconds.
