 "Amadeus" notation software
Author: bmcgar 2017

My early teacher, now in his middle '70s, now has a new PC running Vista.

Until I bought this new machine for him, he had a 1999 computer running Windows 3.1, and writing music using Amadeus.

I've retrieved all the files that he wrote with Amadeus, but I haven't been able to find a way to convert them into a readable format. (Can't print them because his printer went kablooey a long time ago, and I can't find drivers for modern printers for use on a 3.1 box.)

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Amadeus...or has one that I can get a copy of? Or maybe a workaround?

I'm coming up empty handed searching the Web, other than finding software named Amadeus that processes sound files.

Thanks.

B.

I'm not sure if this would work, but can you save the files as PDF's somehow, and then use a software called PhotoScore (typically partnered with Sibelius notation software) to convert the PDF into a Sibelius file?

There's probably a better solution out there. Thats just my initial thought.

Good luck,

Am I incorrect in the thought that Amadeus eventually became Smartmusic? If so, you might be able to find the help you need from the Smartmusic people.

Does anyone know if I'm right about this?

You can install a PostScript printer driver on the Win31 box (yes, they exist) and "print to file" which would give you a bunch of .ps files. These files are easily converted into PDF via GhostScript.

Thanks for the suggestion, but without the app., even if there was a PDF converter or printer driver for 3.1 (which there isn't), without the app, it still wouldn't work.

Onward!

I was under the impression that the 3.1 box was still available somehow...

Don't know if Amadeus can generate midi files. if it can, then generate a midi file and import into any package such as Sibelius which can read midi files & produce them as musical notation. You lose annotations such as phrasing, dynamics etc, but you get the notes. I have transferred files from Geniesoft Scorewriter to Sibelius in this way.

A great teacher gives you answers to questions
you don't even know you should ask.

My understanding of your post is that Amadeus is not installed on the new computer, you don't have an installation file for it (even if will run in Vista) and the old computer with Amadeus installed is not available. You need a way to read the Amadeus files using software that is currently available and runs under Vista.

What format are the files (what is the extension after the dot)?

There is a currently available notation program called Mozart that actually came up when I searched on Downloads.com for Amadeus. I don't know if there's a historical relationship (other than the name itself, which is a little too historical to matter). Depending on the file format, someone might know another program that could read it.

Oops! I had forgotten Mark's suggestion. That looks like it should do the trick. .XML files can be read into several current programs.

There are a couple of freeware programs that enable you to print to a virtual printer, which will automatically create PDF files. One is called Cute, the other is Primo. Both work on Vista, although if you have any problems you can install in compatablity mode.
