Hello!
I was wondering if anyone here knows what type of bass clarinet Eric Dolphy used for playing God Bless the Child on the famous recording/video on YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59Fwzvzgxhk&feature=related
I was also wondering what the lowest note of the instrument is, as I heard him play low D’s a few times but they seemed to come out of the bell, not out of the D-flat and C holes. Does it make sense? It looked nevertheless like a low-C instrument but the sound of the D was so out-of-the-bell-ish. =)
Thanks in advance!
D

You have to have a low C bass. The bonus is that you also get a Db and a C as well.

Larry, 1962, that's when I graduated college. We're showing our age. I bought my Low C Selmer bass three years later, and never looked back.
James, your observation about being able to play the low Db and C are very observant and of course correct. That's what I like about your posts, you're so often correct. ESP (Peabody/BSO) http://eddiesclarinet.com

I was teaching at Howard University at the time; Eric Dolphy was performing in a jazz festival on campus. We spent the afternoon in my studio, between his rehearsal and performance, trying each other's setup and instruments and playing (classical) duets, Bach and Mozart mainly. I couldn't get much out of his bass clarinet setup and he didn't much care for mine. I was amazed at his sightreading ability and his endurance. he was a great musician by any standard, and a very nice person to boot!
Needless to say, I was very shocked and saddened when he passed away two years later.

I read somewhere that when Dolphy died his bass clarinet and flute went to John Coltrane.

Hi Ed,
I'm most successful when I keep it simple. I have also been greatly enjoying your contributions to the board.
Thanks to you and Larry both!

I could swear once seeing a Dolphy record album a few decades ago where he was playing a Leblanc bass clarinet (had the distinctive neck tenon sleeve). But, as Nixon allegedly once said, "I could be wrong".
