 Evette-B12 comparison (history?)
Author: stebinus2

Could someone elucidate for me what is the difference between late Evettes and B-12s? Was it just a changeover in name? When did it happen? Are they pretty comparable or is there something special and improved with the B-12?

It was only a change in name and the case they came in.

In the UK there were three variants of the same instrument - the Evette, then that became the B&H Regent II (with the thinner plastic case with a rubber handle that broke) and then finally the B12 (same case but the Buffet logo replaced the B&H logo).

Then the B12 has gone through various changes over time - a fixed plastic thumbrest (as fitted on the original Buffet Elite) replaced the fixed metal one, a limited edition in transparent perspex with copper plated keys, a new plastic case which had problems with the clasp falling apart, the bell ring was removed, the joints were given a matt finish and a plastic bell ring was refitted, synthetic cork used throughout, a new plastic case with two clasps, natural cork was reinstated for the tenon corks again as the synthetic stuff compressed too much, an adjustable thumbrest was fitted, some keys became more utilitarian and nylon pins were fitted in the LH levers, Buffet point screws with hardly any thread on them became standard, all plastic socket rings were fitted, ... please feel free to step in at any point.

And now we have the Schreiber 6010:

Thanks Chris! Are they done making B-12s then?

The B10 has the Valentino pads, not the B12

The B12 did have the one Valentino pad - for the speaker key.

Hi, both......... I have a plastic Evette, and some assorted B12s.
The evette is great to play, except that it was overall flat. It was impossible against a 440 piano, but I hang on to it because I am sometimes against a slightly flat domestic piano where it comes in to it's own.
I have seen early B12s in shops- not very many now, but they were the same length as the Evette. and probably shared the same tuning characteristics.
The B12 as I now know it dates from who knows when, and the best way to identify it is to measure the bottom joint and bell.
Evette.......... 23.55cm and 11.2cm.

New B12...... 23.4cm and 11.0 cm

The top joint is the same length, and this I am sure accounts for the fact that with a bit of undercutting on the left hand finger holes (and a couple of pad holes) I now have a B12 that does what I want.
Hope that this info is of some use to someone............. H&P
PS. If Buffet would only move the tone holes up a mm or so, it would be an even better instrument to start with.... economics, I suppose.
