Just yesterday I played a recording of Mr Bloch to a friend (Mozart quintet) to demonstrate my "ideal tone". I offer my condolence to his family and friends.

I'm going to have to check that out. In clarinet genealogy terms, he was my "great-grand-teacher."
As long and exceptional a career as he had, the number of clarinetists out there who studied with him or otherwise knew him through music is undoubtedly huge. He'll surely be missed by many.
I, too, would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends.

Yesterday I updated the page to reflect his passing. His page on the old site was quite good, but garageband is a joke and I don't work with that site at all.
So there are 3 pieces on it with his Bio.

Speaking of recordings, Kalman Bloch was the clarinetist on the premiere recording of Pierrot Lunaire, with Schoenberg conducting (done in the 1940s).
And, if I'm not mistaken, he also played on some (if not all) of the "Stravinsky conducts Stravinsky" series on Columbia, as well.

He was a brilliant player...his recording with Walter are among my favorite records. The sound CBC engineered for these recordings is very life like and natural. Bloch was an inspiration to all of us.
