 HELP with Buffet Clarinets!
Author: Eric1616

Hello,

I recently inherited two Buffet Crampon clarinets and would like to obtain some information about them.

The information provided on the Buffet website state that their serial numbers correlate to the following clarinets:

Instrument: "N?ib Am?rique"
Year of manufacture: 23/01/1962

and

Instrument: "N? 1 La Am[box]que"
Year of manufacture: 02/07/1972

Here are my questions:

1. I understand these are R13 clarinets. What key are they? I think Nib is B-flat, but am not sure.

2. Are the keys silver, silver-plated, etc.?

3. What would it cost to refurbish these? Structurally they are in perfect condition (no cracks, etc.) but the keys have a greenish hue to them and I'm sure the pads, etc., have to be replaced. These have been in their case for more than 30 years.

4. Any idea as to their value, in current condition and refurbished?

I greatly appreciate all info. If you could email me at Eric1616@optonline.net I'd appreciate it, as I don't read this forum regularly.

Thanks,
Eric.

It sounds like you have a Bb and an A clarinet, respectively. Most likely, both are nickel plated. I would take them to a trusted technician and ask what work needs to be done on them. Assuming no mechanical problems that can't be fixed, and that the instruments are restored to top playing condition, you will most liekly have two excellent instruments.

Value is hard to determine without a full assessment of the quality of the instruments and the sound they are capable of producing.

"... but the keys have a greenish hue to them ..."

I'm wondering if the 1962 one (the Bb) might possibly have unplated keys - My R13 Eb originally had unplated keywork and that dates from 1962.

I think Chris P is right - the '62 should have unplated keys. They can be buffed up if you desire.
