 Bonade ligature?
Author: Ai Li
Date:   2000-10-26 23:58

Reading in the equipment section of this site, there was mention of a survery which listed the Bonade ligature as a favorite (in the survery).

Intlmusicalsuppliers.com carries it, but I'd like some comments before buying it?

I'm also going to try out the BG ligatures which my local store carries. Yet to decide on the model, though.

The metal, though made in Paris, ligature which comes with my Selmer C85 mouthpiece is definitely 'clanky' and difficult to fit, (especially a V12!), doesn't seem different from the standard metal ligatures.

I have a BG revelation and I love it. I haven't tried a bonade, but I really like my BG for the fact that the reed is only touched by two rails and is allowed to vibrate. It somehow seems to help with tongueing also, although I have yet to figure that one out. (I always thought that was just a thing to say to help sell it, then I let a student use it and his tongueing improved by about 60% in ten seconds flat.)

There has been alot said about the Vandoren Optimum too... I like it, but can't afford it.

Hi Al Li;

I've tried and only been somwhat successful in deburring the Bonade inverted lig. UMHO the workmanship is very poor. Right out of the box they always seem to dig into the top of the MP and eventually wear two parallel groves up there.

So, if you want to prevent the Bonade curse, be sure to apply a couple of strips of tape to the top of your Mp before using the lig.

I have two of them here and they both have very sharp edges where the screws tighten the lig.

Hope that this helps your decision.

Cheers,

Paul

Ditto the above opinion on the ''workmanship" regarding construction of modern Bonade ligs. The old ones seem to work better, but even they still need constant adjustment of the conture so that only the two rails touch the reed. A good Bonade will give you a more precise articulation and a bright, vibrant sound. The new BGs and the Optimum copy the Bonade two rail concept and try to improve on it. IMHO, I rate a good Bonade number one, with the new Bgs a real close second. FYI--I play Winslows on all of my clarinets and saxophones, but before that, I used Bonades. Good luck.

I have 2 older B's, and prefer them on my sop Bb , A and C clar's. Have an M Lurie [somewhat simular] for my bass. Next best are my Luybens and Gigl's.Don
