I'm interested in doing a minor in music, but it is not my main focus. What qualities should I look for in a small music program (not conservatory setting. either small liberal arts college or university?). I know that I could not stand going to a school without a high level music program.

What is do you want to major in, first? Since that is your emphasis, worry about that, then find about their music programs. You want one with, first a reputable clarinet teacher. From their, what exactly would you want to do with music? Teach, perform, compose, etc.? Find out if their strengths match up with your interest. I teach high school and I give this kind of advise to a lot of students, my own and even their friends. Too many (and more their parents than they themselves) go with the name of a school, than do their homework and find out what schools are actually strong in their intended major. Some really major schools that are strong in say, business or medicine, happen to have strong music programs, go figure. Be careful there, too. Let's say that you are interested in a school that is strong in your major and strong in music but it is an emphasis in music education and not music performance. A friend of mine spent thousands at a private school well known for music performance but wanted to teach. She found out later that a state school only an hour away would have been best for her for a fraction of the cost.

I agree, find a school that will prepare you for your major and future career. If the school has a reputable clarinet professor and a decent music program, you're set. If the school you go to doesn't have a good professor or music program, you can always look for a local community or another professional to take lessons from. Don't feel obligated to participate in the music program at your school if it doesn't feel right for you.

Good luck.

Again, "do your RESEARCH"! This has been my motto when talking to my students about their schools of choice. One thing to remember is don't be afraid to explore other options. You would be surprised about a schools strengths. A community college in my area has a nursing program that is highly regarded. Students with an AA from there have been hired over nurses that graduated from major universities. This is an extreme but it serves as a great example of what I'm talking about. I apologize if I seem real overzealous about this subject but as a high school teacher that really cares about their students, I want to make sure that their experiences after high school are chosen with thought and attention to detail. Just like their music making.
