 Replacement keys

OK, lets say I find a Clarinet --- and it's missing a Key. Where would one look to find a likely replacement? Are all Selmer's keys of a given era/timeframe alike in basic design? Is mixing & matching possible between manufacturers? Thanks. mw

First of all it depends how old the clarinet is. Sometimes manufacturers or supply companys(they bought them from a closeout sale) have some of these keys in stock. Mixing or matching is rare, since all manufacturers have different tolerances & design of the key cups, tubing or arms, etc. But these parts can still be used by making a key to fit the instrument,.
If the clarinet is a popular brand, I will order a key that is similar in design & refit the key to the instrument. Sometimes I will have the key or a similar key in my junkpile.

Mark,

A lot of stores have cadaver instruments to use as parts instruments. I even have a few around my small shop, they are easy enough to find a pawn shops, school auctions, etc. Contact the local stores in your area. I did a search one time on the internet by contacting all the music stores with web sites to find some missing Selmer keys off a CT. Taylor Music in Aberdeen, SD responded and supplied me with the necessary parts. It only took two or three days of during my lunch period to find a source.

J B, I use the word "junkers", but yours does fit!! My good -repair-friend in Tulsa, Carl McGuire ordered a Selmer-Paris bass [1970's] key , top of lower joint [to provide the art. C#/G# "finger" to make it a Mod. 33. It went to France and about 2 months later sure enongh it came, $50, but worth it ! Otherwise, when someone up here needs a key or joint, he lets me dig thru the boxes, to save his repair time. Helps my education also. Will take you by, next time , Don

This is the very reason that http://www.MissLonelyparts.com will be up shortly (and not just limited to clarinets). Auto junkyards have been cataloged & networked for years - I remember them having teletypes 25 or 30 years back!

I have a good friend who own a woodwind shop and repairs antique instruments... if you need any keys, he'll first find out if they still exist, and if not, he can make it for you..

Otherwise, if your clarinet is a selmer I would suggest you call selmer up, they are very friendly and very helpfull (probably more than buffet)..

That's how you can contact my friend.... ask for René..

Servette 92 Music
c/o René Hagmann
92 Rue de la servette

Switzerland
Tel. ++41 (22) 733 70 73
Fax ++41 (22) 734 56 51
Email servette-music@mail.pingnet.ch

And that how you can contact Selmer Paris factories :

H.Selmer et Cie
28, route de Houdan
78320-Mantes La Ville
France
Tel: 01 30 92 33 99
Fax: 01 34 77 09 33

I don't remember the name of the engineer , but if you ask "Do you speek english" and "technicien" they will probably be able to help you......
