I have acquired what I am absolutely sure is a B&H Bb clarinet that doesn't have the usual inscriptions on the top section, the barrell, or the bell. It bears the usual "MADE IN ENGLAND" inscription on the bottom section and serial number though. The case is definately B&H too! The instrument is from grenadilla and the tenons are metal capped which is typical of the Edgeware. The keywork is nickel plated so this isn't an Emperor. Any ideas?

It's an Edgware - probably from the mid to late '50s. The first clarinet I used to borrow was like this, having no name on any of the joints at all (apart from the mouthpiece) - it belonged to a schoolfriend's dad who had it from new, still in the original case with the original accessories (still with the original 'BH' ligature and cap). The wood was really dense and highly polished on this one.

These were usually instruments with some (usually cosmetic) failing e.g. a small chip in the wood or a poorly cut tenon that B&H sold as seconds but didn't want to put their name on. Seen quite a few over the years, mostly dating from 50's/60's and usually Regent or Edgeware quality.

Most B&H clarinets from the '60s from Edgwares through to Imperial 926s had poorly cut middle tenons causing them to wobble (the slot was cut too wide as they used the same width cutter on all the tenons), but that didn't stop them being stamped with the B&H logo and model name.
But this particular one I used to borrow was immaculate and was probably just about as good as they could get build quality-wise, and will put many later 926s and 1010s to shame (and many other more recent makes too).
