I used to use a Kaspar mouthpiece--I think it was a Frank Kaspar from Cicero, but I no longer remember. I tried a Gennusa, and liked it better so I've been playing that very happily for quite awhile. (I use a Buffet R13 w/ Moenig barrel). I'm curious: Are there any of you who have liked the Gennusa mouthpiece well, who have liked something else even better?
Also, I'm just starting with bass clarinet. I've ordered a Van Doren B45 (which must be on a slow boat from China). I ordered it because several people spoke highly of it. Can anyone characterize the Van Doren B45, or explain where it fits into the hierarchy of bass clarinet mouthpieces? What are some other good bass mouthpieces that would operate well throughout the entire range of the instrument? My particular horn is a Selmer Series 9.

Bass clarinet mouthpieces: I HIGHLY recommend Roger Garrett's mouthpieces; I also like the Pomarico crystal, and the ESM professional mouthpiece is pretty good too. But definitely try Roger first.

On back I played on a refaced Noblet mp, then a B45, now, for some time, a [slightly brownish H-R ] Selmer C* which seems the best, prob. an exact match of bore and/or taper to the Sel neck. Is R Garrett's mp listed under a trade name?, might wish to try it also. TKS, Don

I recently got a BC mouthpiece from Everett Matson that plays very well. You buy and send him a Selmer C*, and he reworks it to be just like the one he made for the Philadelphia Orchestra BC player. His address and phone number are on Sneezy.

Hi Ken, I started to play on the bass clarinet one year ago. I searched for a good mouthpiece for a long time. A few years ago I've seen Mr. Giora Feidman playing in New York on his bass clarinet a crystal mouthpiece and the results were fantastic! I bought a Pomarico Crystal mouthpiece N°2 and the results are the best that I can image.
After trying some hard rubber mouthpieces and my new Pomarico, I can tell you that there's noting to compare: the crystal one is the best!

I haven't tried the Vandoren B45 (bass cl.) mpc. but I played on the B46 for several months and it was a happy day when I got my Charles Bay piece and put the Vandoren on the shelf. The Bay to put it simply blows the doors off the Vandoren. I'm not sure it's fair to compare these two pieces since the Bay is much more open (.100" tip opening vs. .081" for the B46). Maybe if Vandoren made a piece with a .100" tip it would blow as good as the Bay but the B46 is the biggest they make and it's like blowing through a cocktail straw. The bass clarinet is an inherently stuffy and unresponsive instrument and the way to overcome this is to use a piece with a very open tip with a soft to medium reed (and a loose embouchure). I reccomend a tip of at least .090". I'm thinking about calling Charles in a month or two and ordering another piece, this time with a tip of .115" or .120". I figure such a piece combined with a Rico Royal 2 1/2 reed will get my bass (Selmer model 35) blowing as easy as a tenor sax.

Re: bass clarinet mpc. I started playing a Leblanc bass clarinet last year using a Vandoren B45 mpc and was extremely dissatisfied with the mpc. Very stuffy, lots of squeaks, and almost impossible to play notes above the staff. I ordered a number of mps from Woodwind & Brasswind to try out and just bought a Ridenour Encore. Every mpc that I tried was better than the B45.

For a long while, until recently, I used a B45 bass clarinet mouthpiece, with perfectly good results. I also have C*, but thought the B45 was better. Now, to make for a better match with my clarinet set up, I use a replica of an old Howarths mouthpiece, made by Ed Pillinger in London. It doesn't go quite as loud but it seems more secure and the sound is more refined.

I also play a selmer series nine bass clarinet. Its a great horn! You've just got to try some different set-ups and see what works for you. I have in the past played a selmer c* which works ok, but I was not totally happy with it. The selmer D facing works pretty well. I currently play a mouthpiece Dave Knox of Sterling Mi. made for me. It seems to produce a fuller, rounder,and less bright tone than the stock mouthpieces. It is also flexible and tunes well. The great thing about purchasing one from Dave is that he will continue to work with you until you get a mouthpiece you are happy with. It also comparably priced with selmer and vandoren mouthpieces.

Hi, Ken - I just bought a Gennusa mp for my R-13 Bb. WOW!!!!!!! What a great mouthpiece. I had paid a ga-zillion for a custom made mpc and it was very nice, but when you compare prices, Iggy's mpc is a no-brainer!
