recording of Concertino by Giuseppe Tartini
Author: blacksillouette

Hello all,
I have a student who is auditioning for University and is playing the Contertino by Tartini. I would love to get a recording of this piece (all four movements if possible) for her to listen to and study. Do any of you have a recording of the piece that you could send me or let me know of a recording that I could purchase?

Much appreciated!

Kim

You Tube is your friend on this occasion. There are quite a few vidoes of performances

Ah! Good point. I will do that for the meantime but I would like to try to get a "hard" copy if I can. If you know of a good recording or have one, please send me the info.

Thanks
Kim

There is a very good recording of this by Mark Walton, the local library had a copy of this when i was growing up- but I don't know if it was ever re-released on CD.

There is a recording of the Tartini/Jacob Concertino by Lawrence Sobol on iTunes. Can't vouch for the quality since I don't own it, but it's there.

Also, you may be able to find recordings of the original violin versions of these movements. With a little help from IMSLP and iTunes, I figured out the following correspondences between movements in the Concertino and the source sonatas they came from. I can find the sheet music to mvt. 1 on IMSLP, but it doesn't give opus/work numbers. I actually found recordings to mvts. 2 and 3 on iTunes. (I'm a little partial to the Vincenzo Bolognese recording of the original violin version of mvt. 2, in particular)

Mvt. 1 = Sonata in G Major, Op. ??, No. ??, mvt. 1
Mvt. 2 = Sonata in G minor, Op. 1, No. 10, ("Didone Abbandonata") mvt. 2
Mvt. 3 = Sonata in F Major, Op. 1, No. 2, mvt. 1
Mvt. 4 = ???

By the way, the Boosey & Hawkes website is not quite correct in stating that the Concertino is built up from only two Tartini sonatas, because I found three different sonatas for the first 3 movements. (Maybe they mean 2 different opus numbers, rather than two sonatas).

Thank you mrn for that super-helpful post with the original violin source material! I believe I can slightly update your listing:

Mvt. 1 = Sonata in G Major, B.G17, Op.1, No.4 mvt. 1
Mvt. 2 = Sonata in G minor, Op. 1, No. 10, ("Didone Abbandonata") mvt. 2
Mvt. 3 = Sonata in F Major, Op. 1, No. 2, mvt. 1
Mvt. 4 = Sonata in F Major, Op. 1, No. 2, mvt. 3

Thanks again!

There is an old CD of all four movements of the Tartini for clarinet, recorded by Emma Johnson and the English Chamber Orchestra. I see several copies for sale now on some of the big Internet sites for very reasonable prices.

The CD is on the ASV Living Era label.
