I'm trying to set up a microphone system for my Bb clarinet, which is a very difficult task...
Can anyone help me ?
O.K. that's what I want to be able to do :
- I want to be able to use this system to play in a live situation.. that means probably in a jazz combo..
- I want to be able to use dsp effects such as echo, harmonizers, and any other crazy thing you could think of....
- I want to be able to move around and entertain my audience....
- I want to be able to record in studio conditions with my mic setup.
These are the problems I can allready think of..:
- My mic setup will pick the sound of other instruments, and could influence on my dsp effects..
- My mics will not be able to manage the complicated harmonics of the clarinet and will buzz, resonate and produce the most horrible sound ever..
- I will not be able to pick up all the sound of the clarinet.. that means lower range notes or higher range notes....
These are the solutions I've been thinking of :
- Use two mics : one at the middle joint of the clarinet, by modifying a lyre and fixing to it a small mic with a flexible arm... And the second mic, fix it on the bell, with a mic, like brass players use.
At the moment, the best result I have had so far was using a Revox M3500 low output dynamic 800 Ohm impedance. Unfortunatly I was limited because I only had one.. ( you can't buy them anymore) and I could not move with them, and it would pick up the sound of the other instruments..
I was thinking of using two AKG C419 modifiing one of them to fix it on the lyre... But I don't think they have similar acoustic characteristics as my Revox mic..
What mics should I use ?
Has anyone found a wonder setup ?

We had the privelege of seeing-hearing and renewing old acquaintence with Steve Wilkerson [and Andrea Baker] here in B' vl, happily I was in the accompanying orch for rehearsal and concert, great jazz, Goodman + Fountain !! At reh. Steve's mike, fairly close to the bell, picked up the low chalemeau [sp?] and clarion notes too much, so he moved it farther away and was fine for the concert. It was very helpful when our orch was a bit loud and he played in the lower register. I'm sure he had skilled help re: sound, you might try to contact him. Since he remembered [as I do] our old days in his dad's dance band, you might say "Don sent me". I cant help re: equipment. Luck, Don

There's a specially made clarinet mike that's used by people like Eddie Daniels so they can walk the stage & play. It sounds very nice. Check the Resources->Retail section and search for microphone. It's there somewhere.
