 Need program ideas
Author: George Stalle

I'm planning a recital late spring/summer and would like to know if some could offer ideas about a couple of opening program ideas. I would like to end the first half with the Benjamin Tombeau de Ravel, then offer the Brahms Eb to close.

Ideas for openers? Thoughts about the Benjamin/Brahms combination on a program?

That's a wonderful, challenging selection of contrasting repertoire. I'd think about including an unaccompanied piece and some chamber music, maybe a Mendelssohn Concertpiece?

For a nice, lively attention-getting opener, what about the Milhaud Duo Concertant?

I like the Mendelssohn idea. (By the way, has anyone heard DePeyer's recording of that with the Italian clarinetist whose name escapes me?) Haven't played the Milhaud Duo Concertant. Is it a duo for clarinet and piano?

How about opening with the Weber Grand Duo Concertante? Or is that overdoing it?

I have another sense that the opening wants to be a little more understated, like the Ravel "Piece en Forme de Habanera"?

Hmmm...I like the *very* simple arrangement of four of Mozart's Church Sonatas as an opener.

Maybe one of the Poulenc Duo Sonatas? I've played both the 2 Clarinet one and the Clarinet/Bassoon one, and both are pleasing little numbers.

If you play Eb at all the Bolcom set is nice too.

Any college grad performance students out there willing to share their recital selections? Would be interested to see what all of you are playing these days!

How about the Martinu Sonatina as an opening piece?

Seems like the Martinu would fit well with the other two selections (and it's fun).

A nice suitably light opener would be the Finzi Bagatelles.. There are other options, but this would be a nice, crowd pleasing, yet not overly technical way to get rolling.

Thanks, all, for the ideas! I'll let you know the final program a little later on. . .

All the best!

The Brahms Eb .. I can tell you that my feelings for it are "clouded" by the fact that my favorite pianist (whose brother is a gifted clarinetist and is married to a gifted clarinetist as well) said that it's a piece only a clarinetist would love .. - how about pairing it with something "lighter"? If you access to a c/d clarinet a Molter concerto or for a bit of schmaltz the Mannevich?

Oh, when Shiffirin came to town he stared with the Devienne .. then eventually did the Brahms Eb. (I think, perhaps the Poulenc and Habernera in between)
