I need to find a solo bass clarinet piece pronto.. In time to prepare it and audition for a scholarship in january. I have to be registered and be positive of what piece I am going to play by december 1st. I need something difficult, I cannot find ANYTHING for bass clarinet thats remotely hard for me anymore! I can practically sightread every bass solo I find. I've surpassed everything we have in our high school library, it goes up to grade 6 solo music. Its getting frusterating. I need something appropriate to use for a scholarship audition, and play at an honor band concert (yikes!) if I happen to win the scholarship, as well as use for my audition for the school of music at the University of Iowa..that will be sometime in January also. I'd like something that goes h-i-g-h... just because I have an incredible high range but also shows off my tone in the lower register. I've been unable to find anything, if you know of any pieces that would work for me, PLEASE let me know! Time is of the essence here!!!! thanx

here's a few pieces you might try:
Othmar Schoeck - Sonata
Bo Linde - Pezzo Concertante
Dietrich Erdmann - Concerto
I love the Schoeck Sonata. I'm not sure how hard a "Grade 6" solo is. But i gaurantee any of these pieces will keep you busy for some time.

The Schoek is a good piece to play for an audition.
Also if the Schoek is hard for you there is the
Bozza, E. Aria. it is originally played on small clarinet, but it is very common
to play on bass
Sluka minituaries is also a nice piece with piano. If you have trouble finding
it e-mail me.
I suggest looking at http://www.new-music.org/clarinet.html it has a great selection of pieces with/without piano and publisher information.
if you need any help finding or figuring out anything feel free to e-mail me.
good luck.

You could try Bach's suites for unaccompanied cello, transcribed for bass clarinet by Michael Davenport and available from Alea Publishing at at http://www.new-music.org/alea.html. Most, however, go down to low D and thus require an extended range bass clarinet.

Ashley -
Hindemith's Bassoon Sonata works wonderfully on bass clarinet, and the switch was approved by Hindemith (as told to me by the BC virtuoso Josef Horak).
For truly great music, try Schubert's Sonata for Arpeggione (an obsolete fretted cello). There's a clarinet transcription that works marvelously on BC. It goes up to super-high A, though, and you have to be comfortable playing in the clarion and altissimo.
Beethoven and Brahms cello sonatas should also work. Most of the cello sonatas, if played at original pitch, will require a low D, sounding low C, the bottom note of the cello. Many of the transcriptions take the music down a step, so you'll need a low C instrument.
Good luck.

Any unaccompanied clarinet solo will work nicely. Two that pop to mind are "Sonatina" by Miklos Rosza and "Three Pieces for Clarinet" by Stravinksy. Both are hard. Both have a very wide range. Both sound quite lovely on bass clarinet. Good luck with your audition.

Check out "Voltage" suite by Pierre Max Dubois (pub. Billaudot) imported by Theo. Presser.
Unaccompanied work quite grateful to the instrument. Calls for some "slap tongue", but works
pretty well with or without. Good luck!
