What is the scientific reason behind the need for breaking in reeds what are the physical effects of breaking in on the reed?
Next, how do you guys break in your reeds?

Give him a break, guys. His first question is perfectly valid and has NOT been discussed very often, if at all.
I will give you the fact that his second question indeed has been discussed and revisited countless times. But his original question should be left open.
As far as my input on the topic goes...
I have no answer for either question. My knowledge of the science behind break-in periods is next to none. As for my break-in process, I can't say I have a consistent one nor one that would necessarily qualify as I use Legeres (though they do, as I have discovered from experience, require some degree of breaking-in before they are stable and produce a desirable sound).
