 Moennig Bros Metal Clarinet
Author: madeline

Hello all,

I own two clarinets and I was wondering if anyone had some information on them. I am mainly interested in information on my metal clarinet. I have searched the internet for the make and S/N but no such luck.
here's what is on the bell:

Moennig Bros
Artist-Model
"Silvertone'

on the back above the bell:
1170
Germany

I am assuming the the "Moennig Bros" is refering to Hans and Horst. I think the 1170 is the S/N I am interested in what year this was made and rough value (if any, not that I am going to sell it).

My other clarinet is a wooden clarinet.
Evette
Buffet Crampon
S/N 144377
Germany

I play this one all the time. I am mainly interested what year this was made.

Any information, really, would be wonderful!!!

Thanks!!
CHEERS!
Madeline

Moennig Bros still makes clarinets in Germany. I used to know their address and telephone #. I posted it a long time ago here on the BB. Perhaps a search would uncover it. I don't think there is any connection to Hans, perhaps I'm mistaken. I overhauled a metal bass clarinet last year for a customer. It was a very nice instrument.

Probably not. Horst emigrated to the US when he was 21, his brother W. Hans when he was 23. Since the instrument is marked "Germany" it would mean it was manufactured there, and neither owned any company in Germany.

Many members of the Moennig family from the late 1700s through the present were instrument makers and repairers; they came from Neukirchen and Leipzig.

I also have a Moennig Bros. "Artist" metal clarinet --- thus far unrestored. It appears to be of rather higher quality than the average metal clarinet (which is why I bought it in the first place), but I suspect that, nevertheless, it's worth very little on the market.

Mine is a "simple system" [military style ?] M B Germany ser # 5018, which I date to about 1900-20 era. Looks good, plays mediocre!! Buffet did have clars made in Ger, others can give you more detail . Luck, Don

They show up on eBay from time to time and tend to go for $50 TO $100 and all need
complete overhauls to work. So, your's is worth more.

Almost certainly made before 1944 since instruments made after 1945 were marked
"West German" until 1990. A number of that model have been posted on eBay. Given
the english sounding model name, it probably was made for export to the US (and we weren't importing a lot of german Clarinets after 1941.) It seems like there were not too many student metal clarinets before 1928. So, best guess would be between 1930 and 1940.

Now, you have to tell us how it compares to a modern student model such as a Bundy
or a Vito.
