I know that ligatures are very much a religious issue, but has anyone compared the BG Super Revelation with the Rovner Eddie Daniels ligature? From the listings that I’ve read they seem to be similar in make. I don’t believe in gold being better :-) I tried the Rovner once and it seemed better than my old Bay thin metal inverted. I use a Greg Smith I+ mouthpiece. I’m just about to order supplies so I’m tempted to order a new toy.

Yes, I have tried them both. Actually, I like to collect gadgets and I have a nice collection of mouthpieces, ligatures, etc., all from reputable manufacturers.
The BG and the Rovner are very similar at first sight: good overall response and fairly dark sound. The complete nature of the set-up (as I wrote many weeks ago) is a system where components are all inter-related. So, it is impossible to state: "this one is better than the other" in absolute terms. A ligature must be evaluated "in context".
Elements of the system include ** first ** the embouchure, and then the reed, the mouthpiece, the horn, the room, the weather, etc. Something optimal one day will not necessarily be the day after if something changes (and many things change from one day to the next). The idea is not to get fanatical about those things. Once somebody develops a competent embouchure, a particular set-up designed for this embouchure will work well most of the time. One needs to stop fiddling with the chairs and worry about the Titanic, so to speak.
For the record, I have a well-developped embouchure (mid-university level), a Gregory Smith wooden mouthpiece, Rossi horns and 3.75 Legere Reeds. I used Rovner ED II WITH NO PLATE AND FLAPS ON TOP OF THE BRACES. I found this to provide me with the most liquid, mellow, dark sound, at the expense a little bit of respose in the long tube tones (B and C in pacticular) which I have learned to compensate. I am very happy with my set-up at the moment, but I sometimes feel the need for stronger reeds. I wonder where I will end-up on this point.
