Before I start transposing the C clarinet part to Bb clarinet, does anybody here already have the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique C clarinet part transposed? many thanks!

Forget copying, learn to transpose it on your clarinet directly from the C part. It's a skill every orchestral clarinetist should be good at--even those that own their own C clarinets. Often, the C part is incidental and having to temporalily switch to a cold C clarinet is hazardous to intonation. I have read that Herb Blaymann used to transpose all the C and many A clarinet parts in the Metropolitan Orchestra on his Bb just to avoid bad intonation. Even (if you absolutely have too) writting the C part out on your own will help you learn to transpose better. So, do it yourself.......and be glad you did. Feel the "tough" clarinet love here............

This part, of course, is *not* incidental in several places and sometimes goes by at high speed. Your best bet if you can't find one already transposed would be to find someone with access to Finale or Sibelius and a scanner. It's a fairly long section for the C clarinet (two movements), so you might be comfortable if you can get the exposed passages written/printed out and transpose the rest at sight as a learning experience.

I played this earlier this year. If you're playing principal, you need only worry about the fourth movement. It's easy enough to transpose at sight, and will be a good exercise at sight transposition. If you're playing second, I would recommend transposing the last movement, as there are some exposed passages, and just plain difficult ones (the trills on the melody). It's not worth worrying about transposition on top of the technical aspect of the work. The second clarinetist in my orchestra wrote it out for Bb.

It would have been nice if the Royal Conservatory would accept those parts written out for Bb. This is a long-standing sight-transposition exercise in the Grade 10 clarinet exam. It's how I knew that the examiner supplied by the Conservatory didn't have a clue about clarinets - she didn't ask me to play that particular orchestral excerpt in the exam. A clarinetist would have asked for it, and given high marks if it was played well... it's a beast (especially the trills), something a brass player wouldn't know. So how does someone in Victoria... oh, you're in New York.
