I am currently trying out a Hawkins mouthpiece. I know that Mark and his son play on them. I am curious as to what type of reed Hawkins owners use.
I have found this mouthpiece to be the most perplexing of those that I have tried over the years. I have been trying V-12 3.5 and 4, Vandoren 3.5, and Grand Concert Select regular and thick 3.5. THe mouthpiece sounds wonderful when I hit it right, but it does seem that the reeds tend to close on the mouthpiece fairly quikckly. Volume in the altissimo register is also difficult.

VD or GC 3.5-4.5 . I had mentioned to someone else that these mouthpieces as a rule don't have a real big projection - they close up easily - but have a beautiful tone.

When I was usung a Hawkins, I tried VD blackmasters. They worked pretty well.

I play a Lomax Zinner blank mouthpiece with a 104 tip opening. I've heard that this is similar to the Hawkins. I have for the past several years played 3.5 v-12s on various other mouthpieces, but I find the standard Vandoren 3.5 reeds work very well with this particular mouthpiece.

Hawkins mouthpieces close down because they have very close facings. He has to compensate for the very deep baffle of the Zinners and must close the tip. Try reeds with more meat in the tips.
