I play flute and my daughter plays Bb clarinet. I would like to to play duets with her. At first, I thought I could find duets for a C instrument and a Bb clarinet in midi form on the web. But all I saw were duets (e.g., Telemann's canonical sonatas) for two C instruments. (If anyone knows a good source for C instrument and Bb clarinet duets, please let me know.)
Question #1
If I download a midi file of a duet for two C flutes, and then convert the midi to Noteworthy Composer notation, can I then simply transpose the 2nd flute staff a whole step up? Will this, in effect, give me a duet for a C instrument and a Bb instrument?
Question #2
If I download a trio in midi form (say for two C instruments and continuo), and convert it to Noteworthy composer notation, can I then
A) save a version of the original notation file with only the two C instruments, having transposed the second instrument for Bb clarinet
B) save another version of the original file with only the continuo part
C) play the continuo-only part over the computer while my daughter and I play parts 1 and two?
Any help appreciated.

Nothing against getting music off the internet and transposing as needed, but do you have any local music stores? I know of one not too far from my home that stocks some books specifically for clarinet and flute duets. I would call before running all over town though, each store is different in what they tend to carry. They may also order it for you, if you have some idea of what you want to get.
I'm afraid I can't help you with transposition yet. I'm still pretty early on in my music theory training.

Yes. Just make sure the second flute part doesn't go too high.

Yes. Just be sure to give each file a different name.

Yes. You just delete out the parts that you don't want the computer to play (again saving under a different name).

Hello Mike , where on the net did you find the Telemann duets in MIDI form???

Just to add to what Dee said, you can do all these things in the page setup box under the file menu. Just tick the parts you want to print separately and store them under different names.

I make up stuff for 1 or 2 C instruments and 1 or 2 Bbs all the time using noteworthy. My kids like to play music from their video games, so I have a lot of experience making arrangements for our combo. Sometimes we do classical or ethnic music too.

What I do is: 1)get on the 'clarinet' staff, 2) go to the 'tools' button, 3)and then to transpose staff 4) I select two semitones up and 5) NOT update the playback, that is don't check the little box. The clarinet will see the correct key and the playback will be concert pitch. Sometimes I need to go back in and change the accidentals and put in a key signiture or such.

I select a staff and copy it into a new file when I want a part to play by itself or even print by itself. For example I would 1) open a new file and give it a clever name like Bachcontinuo. 2) go back to the orginal piece and highlight the continuo staff 3) copy it on the edit button 4) paste it into the new file. Then you can play this file alone. It works nicely.

IMHO, a better way to do this is to transpose the notes *with* update playback but then go to "Staff," "Properties," "Midi" and select "Transpose" at two semitones down. That way if you want to edit anything (say adding your own ornaments or variations) it all comes out right and plays back correctly too.
