What does the Eb extension do exactly to the clarinet? Nice case.

"What does the Eb extension do exactly to the clarinet? "

Clark explains it on his website:

http://www.clarkwfobes.com/Barrels.html (scroll down to the bottom of the page)

I have one and it really does work. Mine is grenadilla.

Fobes' Eb extension is cheaper than a Backun bell - any idea how they compare?

I have the Fobes extension and I think it really helps the sound and tuning of the Effer. It melows the sound a bit and helps intonation on notes close to the bell.

The best example I can think of is the solo in Shostakovich 6th symphony. With the extension, getting the B above the staff and B in the staff in tune is qute easy! Mine is Grenadilla.

That case looks awsome..thanks for sharing.

For me, I actually noticed a difference in the sound when I tried the Fobes extension compared to not noticing any difference in the sound when trying a Backun Bell. To each their own as I know many people are very happy both pro and amature with Backun products.

Sean,

The triple case looks great. I may have to look into one too.

The Fobes extension seemed to work better on my R13 Eefer than it did my Prestige in terms of improvement of the sound. On the R13 it did as advertised but on the Prstige it only really helped in ading some reson ance to the low notes. The solo in Bolero sounds better with it on but since most of the Eefer parts are up there in the staff, it's not as much of a concern with that horn(you in the wind ensemble may see more low notes than in the symphony). Perhaps most of the things the extension corrects are those particular to the R13 not the Prestige. I bought the granadilla extension not the rosewood one though.

By the way, the Prestige hass the same joint system as the Buffet Bb's in that the mioddle two joints that are one on most Eefers are TWO on the Prestige. On the tenon of the upper joint there is an odd circle cutt out of the tenon area where the cork is. Am not sure what it does and I've sen it on at least a couple Pretige Eefer's and have always wondered WHY? Anybody??

Does this case have back straps, or at least a shoulder strap, which is in my opinion one of the most important things in a clarinet case.

Wondering if I could reopen this thread for a second...

I'm looking for a triple Bb/A/Eb case and was wondering how the Airway and Wiseman case compare. I've read about the durability and protection, but I'm wondering about the insulation/thermal layers - protection from the cold WI winters! Also, how large are the areas to store music - big enough for oversized pieces?

Those Fobes products are wonderful. I have a student who just bought a Fobes barrel for her A and it is really fantastic.

thanks for the pictures, it really is hard to find pictures of the actual item as the manufacturer doesn't show the down to earth images like when individuals do. nice setup you got going there

Sorry but is it not Leblanc Concerto A clarinet that is on the pic not Leblanc Cadenza ?

Also is there no space in the interior of the case for extra mouthpiece, cork greece etc. ?

Anyone know how the Fobes barrels compare to the Backun? I got one of those cutback ones for my Eb, but I love experimenting with my Bb and A, and would really like find the best matches before starting school next year. (why can't Calgary just have a store with all these nice toys for us so we don't have to do hours of research and mail ordering?"

If the wood of the body of the eefer barrel near the mouthpiece is carved, it is to allow the use of a standard Bb reed without having to cut 1/4 inch off the butt. If you are decribing carving of the actual main tube, then I have no idea.

Iceland clarinet asked: "Sorry but is it not Leblanc Concerto A clarinet that is on the pic not Leblanc Cadenza?"

Indeed so. It is an original Concerto (as opposed to the Concerto II).

The Concerto logo is clearly legible in the last picture. Also the Cadenza has a bar on the rod to the lowest tonehole, which is clearly not present in the pictures.

It might be that the original poster does own a Cadenza, and has put the Concerto in the picture just to confuse us. Except that I don't believe there is such a thing as a Cadenza in A.
