Hi All:
This post is just a "heads-up" for all of you who were surprised, and/or disappointed with the pre-record of the Inaugural Quartet on TV during the Inauguration.
As Yo Yo Ma said, they could not take a chance on a broken string, or any other mishap during that very cold day outside in Washington DC.
We here in NYC have been doing pre-records for many years, and find it does work well for many occasions. On Feb. 2nd. at Purchase College in Westchester, NY, the NY Pops will record what you will hear if you tune in to the TV broadcast on the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Show. We will be on the East River in NYC, playing live for the audience there, but you will hear our carefully recorded performance done in February. July 4th, 2009 is a long way off, so our producers and the TV executives want to make sure nothing goes wrong with our musical broadcast, therefore the pre-record.
As I mentioned earlier, it is common practice to pre-record important "live" music events these days, as all involved are looking for perfection. Broadway cast CDs, pop CDs, and almost all recording is done in studios with perfect acoustics and recording equipment, and very little is left to live performances in a less than ideal settings.
That said, I hope those of you who tune in, far off in July, enjoy the fireworks and our NY Pops pre-recorded music.
