 Yamaha YCL 52 Intermediate Clarinet
Author: SheriKae

Does anyone know anything about the Yamaha YCL 52 Clarinet. I was told it was a YCL 450 but when I got it home I was it had 52 on the upper joint. I do not know much about this clarinet and how it compares to the 450. I paid $240 for it and it is in mint condition.

I am just an ameture player who plays for a community band and plan to play for church.

How does the YCL 52 compare to similar clarinets and did I pay to much? Also came with a very nice hard/soft bag with the should strap, reeds, neck strap and nice ligature.

Any feedback would be appreciated

The YCL-52 is a more upmarket clarinet than the 450 (which has replaced the 34II), so for $240 you got yourself a real bargain there.

You can play this clarinet for a long, long time confident that you got a fine instrument at a rock-bottom price.

I'm not crazy about the stock MP so when you are ready, have your teacher help you with any possible upgrade. You don't have to spend big bucks for an upgrade

You really got a great deal. I have a 52 that my kids played in high school that is a worthy competitor to several of my R13's (keywork is probably better). Outstanding keywork, good intonation...you very rarely see these on Ebay..I think they're just so good that nobody wants to sell them.

You did get a great deal. Especially if it is in mint condition, as you describe. It's a great one to start playing in community band and as a church musician (I'm also a church musician). It should last you a long time. You might think of getting a first class pad job done on it within the next year if you can afford to do so. That should raise your enjoyment level on the instrument.

I've bought several of the YCL 52s for student players and even one for my niece and it served her well her entire school career.

Congratulations on your ambition to play in church. Play in tune and you'll be appreciated.

WOW I AM SO EXCITED TO HEAR THAT!!!!
A few days ago I played a new and used R13 and I loved it but did not have the budget for that level of clarinet and resided to the fact that I just needed to keep my eye out on a good intermediate. I have a plastic yamaha I played as a child though out highschool and before landing the YCL 52 I found an Evette Buffet at a local music store for only $150 and it played well but after a weeks playing a difficult piece i realized it needs adjustments but when I cmopared the craftmenship between the evette to the yamahaa 52 the Yamaha was so much better in my oppinion.

I saw another site that ranked some Yamahas to the R13 ao I am thrilled.

Thank you So Much!!!

Thanks
I am working on "Jesu, Joy of man's Desiring" It is going to take some time but I am trying. What I get for putting my clarinet down for 20 years. But I am getting better that that song is helping improve my skill level. This is a good escape from social work.
Thanks

SheriKae,

I use a B45 with my Yamaha CS; it works well for me. Reed strength for me with that MP is either a Vandoren 3 to 3 1/2 or Rico Concert Grand 3 1/2.

Bach is a good escape from any job!

PS Let me know sometime if you want to swap for the B45 if you are unhappy with it. I've got a lot of excellent MPs (like so many of us with GAS).

I will think about it. I think I have 3 B45 mouthpieces. I purchased my B45 for my plastic Yamaha and then I puchased an evette buffet for $150 at a local music store before I found the Yamaha 52.

I believe the evette came with a B45. (it has B45 engraved I believe)

I bought the B45 before I bought the Evette or the Yahama came which both appear to have B45"s. I know the Yamaha is a B45 and I purchased a B45.

Thanks I will think about it.
Which mouthpieces do you have?

Sincerely,
SheriKae

I had students who played these a number of years back when they couldn't afford a pro horn. Very nice instrument. I would love to find one to have as a second horn. Enjoy!

Got it. Thanks a lot. Can not wait to get off work and go home and play this weekend. Must work late to make up hours due to terrible storms.
