 Where are the Moennigs?
Author: orchestr

I have been trying to get a Moennig Bb barrel for several months, and everywhere I look they're backordered, some say 60 days, some say several months, some won't give me an estimate. Anyone know why? I know they're popular, but seriously!

orchestr,

They are fairly hard to get from Buffet USA. I have one 65mm, 2 -66mm and one 67mm in stock (all Bbs) but I have a good number of them on order for about a year now. Buffet USA will not give me a delivery date so I could only guess what it could actually be and I assume other dealers are in the same boat.
I ordered 6 "A" barrels and it took them over two years to deliver, I never did get the bell I ordered 4 years ago.
I have been a Buffet dealer for some time, we were a dealer back in the 60s and as Buffet changed hands over the years, delivery and quality were all subject to change depending on how the wind was blowing.

All I can say is to be patient, eventually the store nearest to you should get them.....eventually.

You can always get a barrel from a maker like Allan Segal who I am sure can make a beautiful Moennig taper barrel for you. If buffet does not want to get their products out then that is their loss. There are other options.

If I am not mistaken muncy winds should have them in stock - I have a trial out for moennig barrels right now.

Don't forget that Phil Muncy makes a wonderful barrel with a Moennig style taper. The quality control on these is excellent.

I've experienced the same delay the last couple of months. I wonder why Buffet can't keep up with the demand? Maybe there has just been a sudden surge of demand for these barrels and their production process is slow to respond (or reluctant in this economy).

Either way, I've got one now, and my college professor has 8 on order for trial from Lisa Canning. So the studio here is probably going to take advantage of this opportunity.

You might try a Buffet Chadash barrel. Like the Moennig barrel, it has a reverse taper. According to Guy Chadash, it's closer to the original Hans Moennig design than the Buffet Moennig barrel is. For more, see http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=20&i=289&t=289 in the section "Moennig vs. Chadash Barrels."

Keep your eyes open for opportunity (when it knocks :>) I bought an original Moennig A barrel from a local clarinetist for $20. However, I prefered the Fobes A barrel that I auditioned a few months ago basically for differences in tone quality and intonation. Strangely, the Moennig works better on my Leblance Concerto A than on my R13 which I am currently playing.

Perhaps someone else can report with more accuracy, but wasn't the Moennig barrel only part of the improvement process Moennig did to clarinets that came his way and not mean't to stand alone?

FWIW--I use stock barrels on my R13s & Concertos. The only custom barrel I might occassionally use would be a 6-7-67 Springer barrel. None of the modern barrels that I have tried really seem any better, if at all.

That advice is a little late for anyone here. :-)

William asked:
"Perhaps someone else can report with more accuracy, but wasn't the Moennig barrel only part of the improvement process Moennig did to clarinets that came his way and not mean't to stand alone?"

Indeed it was. At the time, a wider bore mouthpiece (often used on Selmer horns, then lateralled to Buffets) was in vogue. This caused a sharpened clarion and a flat chalmeau (already inherent to some extent in the Buffet). The reversed taper bore of the Moennig (more pronounced than the modern crop) helped. BUT he often added a mm length to the barrel and took off a mm from the bell tenon.
Nowadays, that process is eschewed and the taper is less severe.
Additionally, Chadash noted (as reported on the BB) that Moennig left a gap between the mouthpiece and its socket. Today we eliminate the gap, or even let the mouthpiece sit proud of the top ring by a hair.

Hope that answers it.

Disclaimer: I make custom barrels and sell them

Besides, my experience when Moennig worked on my instruments was that he did this kind of work as needed on individual instruments - it wasn't so much one size fits all as mass produced barrels are today. He would ream until he got the result he wanted on a specific clarinet with a specific mouthpiece. Although he knew exactly what he was doing, much of what he did was improvised or tailored to meet the need at hand, whether it was reaming barrels, undercutting tone holes, choosing pads, etc...

brag brag brag :p

Contact any private vendor...most usually keep dozens of various buffet barrels in stock at any given time.

Or...contact Tim Clark. I have one of his barrels for my A clarinet and I can't imagine playing my instrument without it. He studied with Moennig for a summer or two and makes barrels to the exact Moennig specifications. They do vary quite a bit in sound...but they're all of a very high quality.
