I have not played for quite a while - but "in the day" I bought an A Clarinet
Buffet Crampon Serial Number 191734.
(Nickel keys - the silver ones where not available until a couple/few years later)
I was wondering ... how to pass it on to someone who might actually use it.
The serial number list on this website has it made in 1978.
It is pristine ... (as in ... I bought it because I attended the IU School of Music and thought myself to be "a serious musician") ... and almost untouched (as in ... I only played in "the phil" once ... and spent all my time playing in the band.)
My Bb clarinet is "beat to hell" and is "my baby". I would never sell that.
What I have "no clue on is"
What is a professional A clarinet worth?
[1] It is ebony ... (I hear clarinets are made out of something else nowadays). I assume ebony is preferrable.
[2] It is the top of the line horn for it's day
(there seems to be several different levels of professional line buffets now. In my day - they had just one type ... only later did they sell them with silver keys)
[3] It is a special instrument.
Bernard Portnoy and I switched barrells and bells from 4 candidate instruments and picked the best combination from the 4.
[4] It's a bad economy ... but not for me yet.
If it this is a bad time for people to buy new horns ... I can always put it back in the closet for another 30 years.
I do not need the money. I just think it is a waste of a great instrument.

Dan -
It's not made of ebony. R-13s have been made exclusively of grenadilla for over 100 years, except on special order.
Asking prices an R-13 in A run from $2,000 to $2,500 depending on age. and condition. Even though yours is in like new condition, the 1978 manufacture date will probably put it in the low end of the range.
Walter Grabner, for example, has an R-13 A from 1966, fully restored, for sale for $1950 http://www.clarinetxpress.com/forsale.html.
The provenance, with Portnoy input, might make a small difference on this site, but probably not on an auction site.
I suggest you put it in the classifieds here http://test.woodwind.org/Classifieds/index.html?cat=52 or consign it with Walter.

Just so you know.. Buffet did offer these instruments with keys plated in either silver or gold back in that time period, but they were much rarer and most were special order. In hte mid-to-late 1970s y0ou couls also order R13 models with various extra keywork, up to full-Boehm system.
