 Bass clarinet mouthpiece
Author: Aprilyn

I was wondering what mouthpieces are good for a bass clarinet. I am using an Artley bass clarinet atm which comes with the standard UMI mouthpiece (with a number 2 engraved on it) and I want to upgrade. Also, I am planning to buy my own bass clarinet (buffet prestige) when I get a bit more money in a few years time. Any suggestions on a mouthpiece that would possibly suit both?

I want to be able to produce a louder sound and have a little more resistance than what this mouthpiece is giving me. Is it possible to have a variety of mouthpieces sent to me to try out?

Try doing a search. There are lots and lots of posts on Bass clarinet mouthpieces. Anything written here will just be the same old stuff you will find on in the archive.

The sponsors (look right) include a couple of very well respected bass mouthpiece makers.

I am currently playing a Pomarico Jazz #1 crystal mouthpiece that gives my Buffet Prestige 1193-2 a big sound in all registers and improved response with regards to the G#5 & A5 clarinon notes. It works well with Legere #3 traditional cut reeds. This set up should work well on just about any bass clarinet--best plan (as always) is try before you buy.

FYI, that UMI-branded mouthpiece you've got is a fairly decent Babbitt blank (identical to Bundy 3 or recent Conn) and can be refaced into a very good mouthpiece.

I do believe there have been several posts on this subject before, check the "old topics". There are also some on the face book bass clarinet groups. Basically there are several very good mouthpieces on the market today, it depends on the player. Some of my favorites are the Selmer C*, especially touched up by Dave McClune, that's what I use, I also like the Forbes RR facing but there are so many others that are quality mouthpieces. You have to try several types to before you decide. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457

Speaking of the Selmer C*, I was using them frequently as a basis for a very good mouthpiece until about three years ago. I then ran into so many problems with the mouthpieces that I was spending more time fixing them than enhancing them.

I remember one occasion, where I tried 10 Selmer C*s and couldn't find one that played well enough to impress me. That was three years ago now.

Has anyone had better luck in more recent batches of C*S?

I have heard great reviews of the Roger Garret mouthpiece. You can buy it direct from Roger garret or sometimes from Woodwind/Brasswind.

I like my Selmer C* which I bought last year. I don't know how long it sat in the the store I bought it from.

i've had the same experience as walter recently with the C*'s unfortunately.
and i'm also seeing C* issues in alto saxophone mouthpieces in the last year or so as well.

Walter Grabner makes an amazing bass clarinet mouthpiece. I have his Lawrie Bloom model. It has great tone and projection and seems very flexible to me.

Well its been almost a week now and my daughter has been using the Clark Forbes NOVA mouthpiece with a Rovner LIGHT ligature and Legere 2.5 reed.

Talk about NIGHT AND DAY!!!!!!!!!!

Huge sounds, warm, clean, woody......

The best $129 Ive ever spent (I am also a band director and if I had the money I would buy all my students the Fobes mouthpieces)

Does anyone have any experience of the new (ish) Backun Bass Clarinet Mouthpiece?

it's the most expensive i think i've ever seen, so was just just wondering if it's really worth it...£385.00 (or $530 US)

I know some of you will say that its worth it if its right for you etc..so am just really looking for some kind of review about it.

Ben

More expensive doesn't necessarily buy you a better mouthpiece. I recently recommended to one of my students that she buy a Roger Garrett "MO" bass clarinet mouthpiece. Her dad, wishing to buy her the "best" was suspicious of the low price of the Garrett, ordered her a 2-times more expensive one at the same time for comparison. The other mouthpiece (one that's been recommended in this thread -- not Grabner, which I like very much) came in a distant second!
