 Inaugural Ball

Hello,

Anthony McGill wasn't the only one that got to participate in the Inaugural process. In addition to all the military musicians who earned their paychecks that day (freezing weather--massive waiting), some of us played Inaugural Balls. My band doesn't play the inauguration, so I was free to accept employment that night. I got to play the Purple Ball with a local big band that I play with frequently. I've attached a photo of me playing a solo on "Sing, Sing, Sing".

I had a blast and got to meet Herbie Hancock, and see actors like David Allen Grier, Ashleigh Judd, Diedre Hall, and Ed Harris. I'm sure there were more there, but I didn't see them.

Everyone that I ran into in D.C. on that day was electrified! Regardless of which way your politics lean, I think the country is headed for a wonderful recovery, both economic and in the perception department.

I'll send another photo in 4 years!

I played one, too. It wasn't one of the official ones--no Obamas or celebs. I play tenor sax with the Difficult Run Jazz Band (drjb-bigband.com) and we played for the Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. According to John Kelly's Washington column in the Washington Post (Jan. 20, page B3), the local booking agents were shut out of this year's inauguration, complaining that in the past they have been able to book variety bands for functions around town, but this year dance bands were brought in from out of town.

Hello David,

I'm glad you're still coming. Remind me of the dates and I'll get you into our rehearsal. I've got a couple of big private gigs in April too which might be of interest to you.

Cheers,

Congratulations, Ben Redwine and Bill Barner. I can understand the excitement of the musicians who played in the parade, but an indoor gig has its compensations -- playing in a heated ballroom instead of waiting around for the parade's late start and then trying to play on pitch in that January wind!
