Hullo all! Just a few questions..
This year I'm principle clarinet in the georgia all-state orchestra, and one of the pieces we're playing is Festive Overture.
Of the recordings i've listened to, usually the whole section or more than one is playing the solo at the beginning? Is this usual? it'd be a total bummer not to have that as a solo come all-state.
Also, does anyone have a copy of any of the solos in that piece? Thanks to all!

The first exposed passage (5 measures after #4) is for Clarinet I and II in A.

ohhh, okay. is the rest of that just played by principle?
for georgia, we have 4 clarinets in the orchestra. my friend is principle second, so would it just be me and him playing that? or full section?

It depends on what the director will split it into. For example, if two people are reading Clarinet II and you on Clarinet I, than it would be three people. That's how we did it this summer. We had three clarinets at the Governor's School Orchestra and for one piece I had to double on Clarinet II.

Well, what we're doing is 2 on First, and 2 on second. I wonder how he'll do it. Is there any solo in it? Man, i got excited..

Oh, I haven't played the original Festive. Just the Hunsberger and judging by the Hunsberger and listening to the original, probably no solos.

I haven't played it in a number of years, but as I remember the original orchestration has 3 clarinet parts and all three play the tune in unison at the beginning (after the brass fanfare). Whether or not your 4th player (who will probably be doubling the first part for tutti passages) will be playing that lick will depend on the conductor.
By the way, the parts, as I recall, were written for Clarinet in A and the solo was in written C major (concert A major). I hope you all have access to A clarinets.

What about Barber: Medea's Meditation and Dance of Vengeance?
know of any clarinet solos in that?

I have played this piece MANY times and the big solo at after the intro is written for THREE clarinets in unison.
