My first choice would be one that fits snugly around the ligature and won't slide off in the case. I'm not sure what difference the material makes.

Huge fan of the Vandoren Leather. Protects the mouthpiece. If you drop it it's silent. Will fit any lig/mouthpiece combo.

But with the Leather there is a raised layer of leather inside that can catch your reed tip if not installed carefully.
With so many ligature designs, the most important thing is to make sure the cap fits the ligature. For example, a standard cap will not fit the Optimum. I use the stock Buffet Bb cap over my Eb Optimum, which works very well. For the Bb I had to buy a Vandoren Optimum cap. I chose plastic because of the price.

Plastic - flexible, adaptable, doesn't scratch the ligature or mouthpiece and doesn't make such a racket if it falls onto the floor.
The only metal caps (or reed covers in this case) I do use are the ones made to fit Lawton sax mouthpieces http://www.saxophones.co.uk/lawtonebonite.gif.

As I said in the other thread, I use the cap that comes with each respective Rovner cloth ligature. They have this split down the middle that let's them fit with pretty much any lig/mp combo (not just the rovner) and they're made of a tough, but flexible plastic.

"if you were to buy"......but I'm not about to. I've been using for some time now short pieces of foam elastomer tubing that is used to insulate refrigeration lines. They make absolutely no noise if you drop them and they cushion the mp and reed if you drop IT.
