 Save on CDs, buy MP3s!

...just stumbled on an incredible offer from Amazon (no affiliation whatsoever).

I can order a CD including booklet, sleeve, artwork and whatnot for $14.97. I can rip it to mp3 in my favourite bitrate within 10 minutes.

Or I can download the same in mp3 format for two dollars more, but will have to burn a CD, print out and cut some sleeve artwork, have no booklet, would need a jewel case, and so on, which would cost me one hour.

Sorry, this won't work. Will it?

Not to mention the loss of quality (particularly noticeable in classical stuff) when the mp3 compression hits ya!

I thought you get the CD in ADDITION to the MP3. Jeeze.

Most mp3s (and CDs for that matter) are overpriced, imho.

Ben,
It seems you miss the point that MP3s are newer and, therefore, cooler than CDs in many ways.

The difference in sound reproduction between CD and Mp3 is undoubtedly a scientific fact. But what one hears is a function of one's hearing sensitivity. We more mature listeners sometimes don't know what we might be missing ....and sometimes don't care. Try putting your CDs in your shirt pocket when u go for yur Physical Therapy on yur thumbs so u kn txt msg fastr.

I do seem to miss the point indeed when I have to pay more for something that is more convenient for the manufacturer but less convenient for me if I want to use it on my home stereo or in my car.
If I want to rip a CD into mp3 then with the codec and bitrate I choose and not use some potentially substandard download.

FWIW, I think that it's likely, in this case, that the mp3 costing more than the CD is more a result of a price slash on the CD than a carefully calculated strategy of charging more for mp3s. Mp3s tend to have somewhat standard site-wide prices, while CDs can vary more depending on stock levels, specials, etc.

Portability is the thing.

It seems that the moral of the story to me is that the idea of sitting at home, drinking coffee, and listening to music on a stereo is somewhat lost in today's society.

The idea that listening to music is an event or task in and of itself has gone away and that music is useful for occupying the mind while traveling from place to place or while doing other things has taken over.

Personally, I'm a fan of both. However, there's nothing that beats taking an hour of your day and putting in a good Mahler recording for the sole purpose of listening to it in exclusion of everything else.
