 What to do?
Author: clariknight

This may be more fuming than an actual question, but I do need some advice. I am applying to colleges as a music major (performance). I have applied to Boston University and today went to schedule an audition online. What I found was that the latest time I can audition is 10:20a.m. There is only one day. I checked the bus schedules (peterpan and greyhound, I live out in Western Mass) and the earliest either could get me into Boston is 10:00, at Logan Airport. Could I possibly make it in time? There is very little chance I could afford a hotel even for one night, and I know very few people in Boston. Should I just forget about BU altogether? Should I call them to see if there are any other possiblities? Anybody else auditioning that might want to trade a spot? Thanks for your time and letting me vent a little.

I would try explaining your circumstances and seeing if something could be worked out. It's better to try before you "forget about BU altogether"

Just to clarify, I am not angry at the BU auditioning comittee for the times they have scheduled. Just angry at myself for not doing this earlier and at the bus companies for not having any earlier buses.

How about calling BU and seeing if they can put you up in a residence hall overnight? Many colleges and universities will set you up for a one night visit with a current student, or in an empty room, just so you can check out the residence hall situation. If you ask, they might be able to accommodate you, so you could ride in the night before, then overnight on campus and wake up relaxed, with plenty of time before the audition.

EDIT: I looked up some stuff about BU, and here is a link to some information about housing, so I lknow they offer something on-campus:

Perhaps a friend could drive you up? I'm making what will likely be upwards of a two-hour drive each way for an audition this Saturday.

You could also try to Priceline a hotel room. Low-ball it at $20 or so, see what happens.

Have you considered taking a train in? I don't know how close you are but if you can get to Worcester or Fitchburg early in the morning (maybe get a hotel room there) you can get to Boston in plenty of time. Check out the purple line on the MBTA website for routes and schedules.

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and snagged the spot for 10:20, I can always opt out tomorrow. I will call them tomorrow and see about getting a room in a residence hall. I also checked into the train. I can take a bus that can get me into Newton at 9:40 and then take the T from there, but it will still be pushing it for time (especially if the bus is behind schedule). I'll also check into priceline. If I could get a hotel for 20-30 bucks, that might be a possibility.
Again, thank for all for the help. I was in state of panic earlier, but I feel much better now, and I think it should work out fine.

You should really try to get to BU at least an hour before the audition, it will give you time to warm up alittle and recover from the travel. It woud also allow for a small last minute repair if for some instance your horn or reeds aren't agreeing with you.

I forgot to mention before: Good luck on the audition!

And if you sleep in residence, take earplugs so that any unexpected partying doesn't keep you awake. If you don't need them, then great.

Thanks once again to all. And Jeff, that luck just might come in handy! I'll let you all know how it goes when I get back.

Just an update- Boston University was not able to find a way to accomodate me. Fortunately, I have a very nice group of friends and one was more than willing to drive me to Boston at 7 in the morning (in exchange for gas and lunch). Again, thanks for all the advice!

Where there's a will, there's a way! Glad you found a solution, and best of luck!
