i wrote it down in my calendar from last year but was just wondering what actually goes on there other than the obvious music performances from almost all genres.

Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

I've never thought of this trade show as being particularly "orchestral instrument" friendly.

My next door neighbor attends every year and my impression of the event is colored by my conversations with him. He's an electrical engineer/designer and works for a well known company that makes guitar amps/PA/sound systems.

My impression was that it was a trade show more for the popular music crowd. Three days of rock n' roll hootchie koo, if you will.

Actually, at the NAMM show you will see anything and everything that gets sold by a music retailer. Although there are enough drums, guitars amps amps to outfit every garage in the country, lots of woodwind and brasswind displays from all the major manufacturers are there. Bring your mouthpiece and you can blow 'em all. All the hardware, software, PA and recording stuff is there. And every nutball accessory, even some useful ones. You just need to know how to get a pass- the show is not open to the public. Nor are things on sale over the counter- you are supposed to be an employee of a music store. I go every year; it's great fun and the bands you can catch in the evening can be very entertaining ( bring your earplugs!)
