Blue steel springs are prefered for clarinet.I wonder why white gold springs are not used.I have a silver handmade SANKYO flutes which uses them.
Its merits are:
1)Key backward movement is very constant:Moves at the same speed unlike steel needle spring.
2)Spring force itself is also very light.

The mechanical mechanisms on the flute are much less voluminous than those on the clarinet so they require less effort on the part of the spring. Could cost also be a consideration?

Maybe. If I were a technician,I would use different size needles:to move a few keys will need larger force.

I personally like a bit of resistance to my springs. They should open faster than I can move my fingers.
