Has anyone had any experience with Jacob Winter cases? Are they sturdy and reliable cases? I am looking for a double clarinet case for my Bflat and A.

Thanks in advance

I bought a Winter bari sax case a few years ago, it's reasonably well made and was a very good value. No experience with their clarinet cases to offer you, unfortunately.

I forgot to ask as well, is there such a thing as a single case just for an A clarinet? I have a great small compact Bflat case with an Alteri case cover and I was looking to get a similar set up for my A clarinet, since I do not use it everyday.

Jakob Winter make Buffet cases, and the double cases have the bells remain on the lower joint tenon while cased up, so not ideal.

You can get single A cases made by Winter - same as the B12 plastic case but for an A instead and they won't break the bank.

I got a double A-Bb Winter case from WWBW approximately 12 years ago, but it looks nothing like the pix on the website; it looks more like a traditional mens' briefcase. The biggest problem I had was the latches, which were those sprung single-tab latches. Unfortunately, the springs on both tab latches broke within a year after I got the case, so I now need 2 hands to open each latch.

Oh, and there's a music compartment in the lid you can access via a padded drop-down divider when the lid is raised, but unless you keep a 3/4-inch stack of music in the lid, the lid padding doesn't hold the sections of the clarinet in place with the case closed, and so they rattle around and get displaced in transit. And even with the 3/4-inch stack of music in place, the stuff in the accessory compartment (reeds, screwdriver, reed knife, pencils, biz cards, q-tips, cork grease, humidifier etc.) ends up distributed all over the case too, so I've had to make a thick foam insert to cover it all when I close the case.

The accessory compartment is capacious, however, and the case holds three barrels and two mouthpieces, so the layout is excellent.

The problems with the case are design and functionality flaws that I've learned to live with. In terms of construction and solidity the case couldn't be better, and other than the broken latches, has held up extremely well and looks terrific. I paid around $150 for it, if memory serves, which seemed a good deal at the time.

Personally, if I were buying a replacement case now, I'd get a BAM double case even though they're probably twice the price. Everyone I know who has one, loves it.

I recieved an e-mail back from the representative for the Winter cases, and it turns out that they do not manufacture a single A clarinet case. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there such a thing as a single A clarinet case? If not, what sort of double case would you recommend? I would prefer a small case, that I could put a case cover on, it gets pretty cold in Calgary.

Thanks

I've sometimes gone to the expedient of 'enlarging' the hollowed areas inside Bb cases to fit an "A" clarinet, as long as there's a bit of extra width available. Most modern cases have a molded styrofoam block underneath the fabric skin, and that styrofoam can be shaped to a certain extent by beating on it with a small hammer to crush it selectively (seriously). Sure beats* buying a new case!

*no pun intended, for once

The Yamaha double cases are fairly compact and keep all the joints seperated.

Maybe there wasn't so much demand for single A cases, though do try woodwind specialists to see if they might have them in stock.
