Hi all,
Anyone try the Morales/Backun LRT-Legend Clarinet Mouthpiece? It seems pricy at $500 SRP. Tip opening is 1.03mm I believe. All thoughts and opinions are of course welcome.
Regards
Mark

Hi Mark, I never got to try a Backun Legend mouthpiece but I have been experimenting with the Backun Orchestra mouthpiece for 2 months now.
Dynamics/Projection:
The backun has excellent control and range of dynamics and fine projection. It has not problem blending in a group and will not have a problem being heard while soloing either.
Tone:
The interesting thing with this mouthpiece for me was that at first the sound was dark but over the course of a week, it got brighter. When I listen to the sound of it, it is not particularly dark but not too bright. Also, it is not a very warm piece, maybe because there is a lack of darkness.
Response:
I find that this is a free blowing mouthpiece with a little resistance. I never had any problem getting any note out or going over the break.
Intonation:
On my 70's vintage R13 Buffet clarinet, I didn't find any problems with intonation.
Overall, it is a good mouthpiece but I think it is overpriced. I believe the price comes from the unique design of the blank which supposedly strengthens the face and allows for more accurate and consistent facings.
I personally do not enjoy this mouthpiece as much as I enjoy a Hawkins mouthpiece. However, do not let anyone tell you or convince you of anything. It is a matter of opinion and the only way you can determine if a mouthpiece works for you is if (and only if) you try the mouthpiece. What might for me or somebody else may not work you or vise versa.
Go out and try stuff!
-Tim

From my experience with this specific mouthpiece and from listening to others... They feel much better than they sound. Make sure you record yourself and compare it to your old mouthpiece... you may be shocked.

Some day I'll have a collection of all of the big named mouthpieces to compare head to head.
Smith, Genussa, Behn, Hawkins, Backun, Vandoren (maybe 3 facings of them), and Fobes are on my wish list.
I'm getting close though!
In Panera right now and they are playing a Rossini Wind Quartet - they really must not want kids hanging out there

I've never heard anything but '60's-sounding jazz in our Panera. Never anything "classical." :-)
