 Improved Throat System

Over Christmas away from clarinet I took to reading Jack Brymer again.
In the 1979 Edition he extols the ( then) recent mods to throat notes put up by R Mazzeo and others ( p 54,etc ), Says mods are "stunningly simple" "more secure" and "improve throat tones". He says " great advantage for the future ... regret adoption will take all too long... fault lies with players not system... deeply ingrained habits..." Then ( 30 years ago) " For the young there is no problem for the fingerings are easier to acquire...provided teachers of sufficient honesty and courage..."

I'd forgotten all about this. Has anything happened in 30 years ? Is it now discredited ? Apologies if its all been well discussed before.

best regards for a good New Year.
Roy

Isn't that the longer, tapered tube on the throat Bb?

Look for the Galper register key...David Blumberg, also Steven Fox makes a Bb mechanism(dedicated Bb tonehole).

The Rosario Mazzeo system allowed Bb4 to be played without the use of the register key--I seem to remember just the A4 key plus any of the 1st, 2nd or 3d rh finger would produce Bb4. It's main advertising ploy was that it was an "easier" way to cross the dreaded break and gave a better sounding note than with the register key. Some Bundy Resonite clarinets were produced with the Mazzeo mechanizm but it's popularity never really took off with the clarinet community, maybe because it involved having to re-learn too much basic clarinet technique.

Here is a link about Rosario's career: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosario_Mazzeo

My Rossi clarinets have an additional hole for throat Bb which is opened together with the register key whenever the LH thumb ring is not depressed. This does improve the tone quality of the throat Bb to some extent although it is still a fairly weak note and I still always employ resonance fingerings.

Definitely check out the Galper key. I got one a few months ago and it's great! (at least for an old R-13).

I have the Steven Fox Bb. The tone is as strong as the alternate fingering...A plus trill key.

There is a long history of research/innovation/commercialization, all thru the 1900s to improve the Boehm's register key/ mid-staff Bb "compromise" . A Search of our archives will give much information-conclusions- success in the several methods. Several definitive papers were given at the Edinburgh conference and many articles in the ICA Journal are also well worth studying. Prob. most of us are [somewhat] satisfied with the "simpler" solutions for the Bb sopranos, but for the larger cls, IMHO, the auxiliary Bb venting tonehole and its more comples key structure is highly desireable, if not required. AM thots, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
