Hi Skip - There have been many "adjustable clarinet barrels" invented , a few of which were marketed to some degree. The earliest I ever saw was on a Bettoney Silva-Bet, a very good metal cl. I made a quickie patent search on Google Patents using the above term, finding a goodly number of older issued patents, and will make a look-see search later, and suggest you might do the same. Many of the retrieved pats use the "telescoping" method and often commercialization brings about changes from the pat. Good luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I had a Cundy-Bettoney similar to that at one time. Many years ago my grandfather had a small adjustable brass magnifier that rested on 3 legs that he used for doing pen and ink drawings. The adjustable barrel worked on a similar principle i.e. screw threads.

Hi Bob - I also have a 3 legged magnifier, certainly from a parent, perhaps grandparent !! A treasured antique . Skip, I took a look at my search, in US 5,291,817 there is a "laundry list" of refs cited, many early 1900s, which make fascinating looks at early tuning barrels. I found one 1,36x,xxx which closely resembles yours in appearance, but the Loomis [ Conn] 1,521,655 is more likely IMHO. Have a look, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don,
I did look around on Google Patents (first time for me). I couldn't easily find your references. Pardon my ignorance but could you please link or redirect me?
Thanks.

Hi again, Skip, rereading my post I sure can see my errors in how I suggested a Google Patent search, SORRY ! On G P, search for 5,291,817, it will be the upper retrieved pat #, click it, then scroll down to the Citations list. Two pats to a Sinclair are #'s 4 and 5 down and bear some similarity to your fine pic. . #'s 7 and 8 down are to Loomis, an invertor for C G Conn, who I would guess is your manufacturer, being the most prominent US music firm of that era. You can view these, by clicking on the blued pat #'s, and prob. the drawing click will be the most informative for you, but feel free to explore more of these sites for your introduction to this "jungle" to search in. I have the "problem" of some familiarity with patent searching. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
