Bass clarinet in "An American in Paris"
Author: Simone

Has anyone ever played the bass clarinet in "An American in Paris"?
Did you manage to play everything like it's written or did you play some parts one octave below? Any other comments to this piece (esp. bass clarinet part)?
Thanks to everyone
Simone

Simone, I have played the bass clarinet part in American in Paris, although it's been a while since I've played it, but I don't recall having had any difficulties with the range. Perhaps you could help jog my memory... -- Nate Zeien

Simone, I've played the bass clarinet part as well, some years ago. It was great fun (I think more fun than the 1st cl part, which I have also played). The only exposed bit from memory is the solo not too far into the piece after an accelerando string bit. The rest is pretty much with the rest of the section and the saxophones (without saxaphones, you will be a little exposed). Of course it depends on the serviceability of the bass clarinet you are playing on as to whether notes above B-flat (some persist on calling this "the break") are easily played or not.

Simone:
I played the bass clarinet part on "An American in Paris" last month.
Some parts are quite challenging but few are exposed. There are three bona fide solos for bass clar; specifically,7 bars after #8,
at # 53(if no saxes playing with you),and 8 bars after 68.
Also, 3 before 16 and 16 itself are quite exposed The tuba is with you.
As mentioned above by Gavin, your instrument has to be in top condition to play some of those high passages. The high D a bar before 42 can be played with the register key alone. They'll never hear you in the last 5 bars of the piece so I guess you could take part of that passage down an octave.
Best wishes!
Al
