Hi I am an absolute beginner and have bought a secondhand Yamaha 26II
It came with a 6c mouthpiece. The mouthpiece has some marks on it so I would like to replace the it and wonder if I should replace it with another 6c or , being a beginner , go for a 4C or 5c. I guess the question is - Is their a huge difference between the 4 , 5 and 6C mouthpieces? Or should I be looking at a completely different MP

Yamahas are ultra-beginner mouthpieces and are probably the worst on the market...
Please, switch to a professional or semi-pro brand...

For a beginner, try the Fobes Debut or the Hite Premiere. Try them both...good stores or mail-order houses in the United States like Woodwind Brasswind or Fred Weiner will let you. Both around $30. Perhaps T. W. Howarth in London has such a policy.
If you don't have a teacher, virtually everyone on this bulletin board would urge you to find one. You'll want some advice on reed strength, certainly, but you'll also want to avoid weeks/months of frustration by getting solid guidance from the start. Good luck.

Yamaha 6c is probably just fine as long as the rails are in good shape. Have someone test it for you to make sure. Find a reed strength that suits it.

Find the teacher first and get her to help you select a mouthpiece. Both are critical!

if you're on a budget, any of the yamaha mouth pieces will serve their purpose well. Otherwise, the brands mentioned in the other posts are very nice too.

Being a beginner as you say you are, a good teacher is priceless! If however you cannot currently afford one, look into the Fobes, Hite, or similar types mouthpieces. In this stage of development most of those will suit you fine. If you can afford them, look into the vandoren line of mouthpieces. For many, the beginner mouthpiece would be the 5RV Lyre (make sure it says 'Lyre' and has the little lyre symbol). Of course, opinions vary and many professionals use the 5RV Lyre.
