Does anyone have views on whether tenor sax reeds work with a bass clarinet? I am toying with the idea of trying Vandoren Java tenor sax reeds on my bass, but would welcome any comments before I take the plunge.
Thanks

Give it a shot. You can't hurt anything and it will only cost you a couple of bucks.

Hi Mate,
Well... When i first got my Bass Clarinet, I didn't know where to find Bass Clarinet reeds as none of the music shops where i lived had any, so i decided to by a Tenot Sax reed (Vandoren) and i used that for about 3 months. There is of course gonna be a difference but it still works!

On of our local music professors who used to sub in with the NY Phil orchestra has a special facing on his b-clar mp (he uses nothing but t sax reeds) that he let me copy on mine. So for me, t-sax reeds work fine--although recently I have been using a Legere b-clar reed for theater gigs where I have to switch off with other wws. FYI--my mp is a VD B-45.

Graham, bass clarinet reeds and tenor sax reeds are a bit different. They will work fine, but in most cases it is best to stick with the reeds specific to the instruments. However, I am currently using Vandoren bass clarinet reeds for tenor sax, mostly because currently, the only thing available to me where I am are Ricos. The Vandorens aren't perfect for tenor sax, but they still beat the Ricos by a long shot. I have also used tenor sax reeds on bass clarinet, although I don't really like the sound and feel. There's nothing wrong with using a reed for the other instrument when you can't find anything else. I think you could give it a try if you are curious. As posted above, I know of a few players who do this. -- Nate Zeien

I am using (do I hear a shudder?) Bari 'star' tenor sax reeds (medium) on bass clarinet. Of course, it's a plastic bass clarinet...
Same mouthpiece as William, my trusty old khaki-green B45.

I've tried tenor sax reeds on bass clar, it doenst work as well for me as bass clar ones do. I use bass clarinet reeds on tenor sax all the time however, they work quite well. I seem to be stuck on a LaVoz medium-hard for bass clar, LaVoz hard for tenor sax. I know, Rico *shudders* is horrible, but I seem to be stuck on rico royal 4s for alto sax. Theyre loud, and they last forever. And when youre playing alto sax for marching band, what more could you ask for ? : )
