 O'brien Crystal Mouthpieces?
Author: Frank

Does anyone know what happened to the O'brien Crystal Mouthpieces? I can't seem to find them anywhere anymore. Weiner used to sell them and so did Woodwind/Brasswind, but neither has them listed anymore. Did they go out of business? Or get purchased by some other mouthpiece maker? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Frank

No, I dont either! I have two old [40-50's] O Briens, a 2 and a 2S, one of which may have been refaced. I also have and like better [via hasty evaluation] a Selmer Clarion which has the same design character, so have jumped to the conclusion that Sel took over OB!! I believe these are listed in the various mp comparisons in the brochures. Will be interested in what other [olders!] may know and nest week will give all another trial, after my concerts cease!! The Pomarico discussion under "bass-clarinet@egroups.com" may be of interest to you. Luck, Don

i purchased an ob off of ebay and didn't care for it at all. Then i found M. Lurie crystal on ebay and like it quite a bit. My main problem is that i just purchased a g. smith Kasper and that is about the only mp i reach for any more. Anyone want to buy about 5 or 6 great mp.

Bob, I'm interested, but I think buying and selling should be left for email and the Classifieds after this. I think Mark would probably agree. -- Nate Zeien

In the world of clarinet equipment, many people say.. this is good, this is bad.... and this has happened with the crystall mouthpiece....

The italian's started with it 20 years ago.... and the teachers in the conservatories over there, told their students.... "Get a crystal mouthpiece... " So that's what they did... and ..... the students of the teachers, became teachers themselves... and lotsa people thought.. WOW crystal is amazing....

Crystal is good during a short time.. that means at perfect temperature.... but doesn't work as well... when too hot or too cold....

Anyway.... Today the fashion is Vandoren B45 mouthpieces..... they are pretty good apart from that they are copies of Charles Bay mouthpieces.... Oh well I play B45 lire.. and am pretty satisified......

I think you should try to forget about finding crystal mouthpieces... It's not the fashion anymore..... you can maybe try to find one in a shop which has lotsa old things.... but I would recommend you to go to a clarinet shop... and try all the mouthpieces they have... You could maybe find a good ebonite one.
