 Trinity College Clarinet staff
Author: zeboyak

Hello, my name is Daniel and I´m studying a MMus at the Trinity College of music next year. I ask you for information about the clarinet teaching staff, because I´ll have to choose my teacher. The only one I know is Lluna because I´m Spanish too. So, could you tell me if you like someone specifically, because of his teaching or artistic skills?
They are:
Hale Hambleton
Fiona Cross
Victoria Soames Samek
Michael Whight
Ian Mitchell
Joan Enric Lluna

Thanks,
Dani

Does this mean that Keith Puddy is no longer there?

Anyway, Lluna is artistically excellent in my view. Hambleton has years and years of experience but heavily biased towards opera. Wight is an experienced major symphony orchestra player of good playing reputation. Soames-Samek has great knowledge of the history of clarinet playing and therefore the relevant styles, and is generally well regarded as a solo player; my guess is that she would be good for making contacts.

Never have had a lesson with any of them, though for me, it would be tempting to go for Lluna.

All these people are pretty well known and respected on the UK clarinet scene. Which would suit you probably depends on your personality and interests. I have never learned from any of them myself but I was at another college where Victoria Soames-Samek also taught and met her a few times and she is very nice. I hear that she expects you to work pretty hard (but rightly so, if you are going to get anywhere).

Good luck.

Vanessa

Thank you so much, your answers are really helpful.
I had made a mistake, Keith Puddy is there as well.
So what´s about Ian Mitchell?
Anyway, I´m looking for some Wight´s recording but I don´t find anything. Is he chiefly an orchestra player, isn´t he?

From Spain,
Dani

Consider Keith Puddy. He has extensive historical knowledge of the clarinet, has had a major orchestral career, and a successful solo and chamber career. Again, however, I have no knowledge of his teaching style.

I do not know of any solo recordings by Wight.

Hi,

Here is my response to your question, though I studied at the Royal College of Music.

Hale Hambleton-Plays in the English National Opera Orchestra and is a wide bore 1010 player (playing Eatons I believe)
Fiona Cross-As fair as I understand it she studied at the RCM and plays principal with the Manchester Camerata.
Victoria Soames Samek-Recording artist, in charge of Clarinet Classics Record label
Michael Whight-Principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, I did a masterclass for him some years ago and he's a nice chap.
Ian Mitchell-As fair as I remember he was principal with the Covent Garden Opera Orchestra and again a wide bore 1010 player (again playing Eatons I think) in the British tradition.
Joan Enric Lluna- You know him but again he's a nice chap also.

Have you considered the other colleges like RCM, RAM and Guildhall?

Why don't you try asking one or more of them if they'd give you a private lesson or two? That way you can figure out who YOU like. Finding the right teacher for YOU is the most important thing.

That being said, Victoria Soames Samek is a very musical player and exciting to listen to.

Michael Whight is not teaching at Trinity this year. He told me that he has too much work with the Concertgebouw.....!! :) He has recorded the Mozart Concerto on the RPO recording label and it has also been picked up by Harmonia Mundi. Lots of fine improvisation....
Joan Lluna is the teacher that most of the overseas players learn from. He is a player with fine sound and students there seem to enjoy learning from him. there are several CDs of his available.
Hale Hambleton is a fine teacher if you want to learn more about English clarinet playing and the styles. Very good for technical development and his knowledge of the English repertoire is wide. A very nice person as well!
Fiona Cross is a fine player and musician - a good teacher.
Ian Mitchell is head of Woodwind Performance. He is mostly known as a Bass clarinet teacher.

I hope this helps

David
