Just happened to catch her playing on cable. Some of the most exciting clarinet and sax I've heard from anyone: jazz, latin, klezmer. Have I been living under a rock, or have some of my BBoard cohorts experienced her playing, too? I put her right up there with Pacquito!

She sometimes play here, usually with her brothers the other Cohens (another sax and trumept) who play here more.

Almost ashamed to admit that Pacquito was unknown to me until I got Yo-Yo's latest CD. Great playing.

Last year I heard this great clarinet playing on the radio, I actually bothered to look up the play list to discover Anat Cohen. She played in the Portland Jazz festival in a quartet and knocked me out playing Coltrane. She's one of those players for me that inspires excitement to practice to sound like that and, at the same time, despair of ever achieving it.

Her playing makes me wonder why I even try................ But that is what my friend, Chuck Hedges told me years ago, "Just when you think you are really good, there is always someone that you've never heard of that will blow you off the stage." Hmmm....maybe if I played the same mpc that she does (LOL)

Hi Larry & All:
Happy New Year!
Anat is a terrific young player. She has made a real mark on the Jazz Clarinet scene here in NYC, appearing at all venues and sounding great!
I first heard her a few years ago, when she was playing Lead Tenor Sax & Clarinet with the Jazz Band, "DIVA". They were asked to join us by Skitch Henderson at our NY Pops concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC.
The band was good, but Anat really stood out as the best soloist that night.
We spoke, she asked about playing for me & work in NYC...I told her she sounded great and keep up the Jazz clarinet chops, and she'd do just fine in NYC or anywhere! She was very young, very talented, and I knew she'd make a big name for herself over the next few years.
We've remained in touch; emails, and I try to catch her group when they are here in town. When you hear her live, she'll knock your socks off!!! Really a terrific musician and fine Jazzer.
Be well,
JJM

I heard her last February at the Portland Jazz festival. Small hall, 2nd row seats. It was a very good time.
