Hello. If anybody can recommend me to a good clarinet repair shop in the NY/NJ area please do so. I want to replace the springs and the pads in the lower joint of my buffet R 13 clarinet. I am looking for the best shop available. Thank you.

I can recommend two excellent clarinet repairmen. I'm sure there are many others, but I don't know them personally. They are (in alphabetical order):
Mark Jacobi (212-391-1315)
Jimmy Yan (212-581-9765)

I've also heard good reports about the repairman at The Woodwind and the Brasswind on W. 23rd St, Manhattan

Mark Jacobi is excellent, but he's so busy that it's very difficult to get an appointment with him. Also, he works slowly, so be prepared to do without the instrument for a while.

The phone number at Woodwind and Brasswind is: 212-627-7229 or 800-767-5764
Their repairman (Yoshi is his first name, I think) is good, but also very busy like the rest. Especially this time of year when the weather is changing.
Seems like there are much fewer (good) repairmen around these days.

With regard to James' question about the "best" repairman, that's a bit subjective. Jimmy Yan takes care of Stanley Drucker's clarinets, if that means anything. It may also mean that he's located closest to Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. (If you go there, look on his wall for a caricature of Steve Hartman)
