 Speaking of Names...

Do any of you name your instruments? I always thought it was weird when I first started band, but now I have a name for all of my instruments.

Hubbard - my Hobart M. Cable piano

Lissette - my Yamaha plastic clarinet (my first clarinet)

Toby - my Yamaha trumpet

M.J. - my jupiter bari sax (named for the words "my Jupiter")

Voittaja - my Buffet 1890 Albert syst. eefer

Whiner - my Weimar plastic eefer in Boehm

and last but not least...

Oogie Boogie (Obie for short) - my Buffet 1967 B flat R13 (named after Oogie Boogie in Nightmare Before Christmas)

My naming scheme is eerily similar to Ed's.

Embarrasing, I know, but I borrowed my screen name from my bass...

... affectionately known as 'The Count' ...

I've never given any of my instruments names, though I did think of one for my alto sax a little while back:

'Alto sax Zarathustra' (as in 'Also sprach Zarathustra')

Former oboe finisher
Howarth of London
1998 - 2010

The opinions I express are my own.

I do---since my Patricolas have the same characters of my three female cats, I have given them the same names:

Bb - Lafayette (a practical cat, always around)

A - Mina (the big one, lazy and shy)

Eb (rosewood) - Mantra (small-sized and always mewing)

.........ahem.........

My Bb is Lucy, the A is Lars. The mouthpieces haven't told me their names yet, though I think the M13-Lyre is something like "Deadmeat."

I have two plants, Annabelle and Spree. My cars are Lamar and Gulliver.

Aside from that I live alone.

I often give names to my reeds, but most are not appropriate for posting here..........

One of my friends named her Baritone Oofie.

I use a Hite Premier mp and it works excellently, but my buffet mp, which never really gets used, sucks.

This may sound ridiculous, but I encourage my (younger usually) students to name their instrument - I find it encourages good care habits. Students are more prone 'to look after Emma the clarinet' than 'swab out their clarinet'. Even if it only works for a couple if any, where's the harm?

So as not to be caught out, all of my instruments therefore have names - all named after girls who were important to me at the time of purchase ;o)

"all named after girls who were important to me at the time of purchase"

problematic if you bought your instruments as a "matched pair"

I don't have names for them, but my clarinets each have a birthday. Being the day that I bought them. Actually kinda funny, after running the serial numbers on the Buffet website, it turns out my A clarinet was made 11 years before I bought it brand new from mr. Weiner....go fig??
