To all you "budding" inventors out there .... How about inventing a "clarinet
cape" to snap and put around the clarinet while on the peg..... Could be lined
with warm fuzzy material like the clarinet cases are made of?? Just a thought
while sitting at a gig keeping my clarinet warm........

While it is convenient to use a floor stand, I like to keep my spare clarinet in my lap, as it doesn't get as cold there. I am a klutz, unsafe around those tiny stands that pack so easily, and am glad to have one less thing to drag around.
Verne Q Powell allegedly invented the "thermos clarinet" while working for Haynes. This was a metal, double-walled instruments, with vents at the top and bottom to allow the player to blow in warm air. Mr.Powell never got credit for this, so he left and started making instruments on his own.

I once heard of someone who used to carry a car battery around which he wired to a special clarinet stand which then became warm.

My wife made a clarinet cozy that fits over both B-flat @ A Clarinets that sit side by side on their stand which is anchored to my music stand. She made it from black quilted material that provides warmth and protection from my two cats (who have never bothered the setup). If I choose to leave the reed in place [legere] I simply use the mouthpiece cap.
I never leave the instruments in this setup for extended periods of more than a few hours - only when I know that I am going to return to rehearse a short time later.
The light padding in the quilting provides insulation against drafts and light
"bumps".

(LOL) Sounds similar to a contraption I used to have in my dorm room at college for making hot dogs. You stuck a metal prong into each end and plugged in into the wall socket--cooked those little tube steaks in a flash!!!

Vunderbahr, Wm , an ?explosive? [short circut] conclusion ?? Haynes patent is viewable , just go to Google Patents search for Thermoclarinet, can post # if req'd . Judging by the mediocre "performance" reported above, there may be opportunity for a ?patentable? alternative solution, other than just putting it inside of a warm ski Jacket. Don

When attending at a cold hall I've wrapped my instrument in a electric heating pad set on the lowest setting, and all of that wrapped in a large towel. Close to performance time it comes out of its wrap and then I just keep it warm by blowing air through it until we go on stage. This doesn't help those who switch instruments, though, but at least it helps when you're only using one.
